In fact, Kaysen wasn't thrilled with the bubble bath portion of his first year session at all. He didn't want to get in the tub, nor did he want to be wet. He much preferred to stay dry and play with the duckies in the water.
Kaysen's first birthday session continued with a cake smash. Noni picked out this incredible green cake, which tied into the Wild Child shirt that Kaysen got for his birthday from me. When we first placed the cake in front of him, I'm convinced he thought we'd lost our marbles (not that its hard for us to do that). Soon, he started digging in and by the end he didn't want to let us take the cake away.
But the best ones are those I'm blessed to photograph. He came into the studio for his first birthday and celebrated with a three part session: Portraits, Cake Smash and Bath time. The portrait session kept him busy, with balloons to play with, a crate to sit in, and plenty of play things so he wasn't creeped out by Auntie Markie's blue hair.
Last week, I was doing the millennial parenting thing and tossed tablets at both of my kids while I finished up my weeks worth of work. When it was time to shut them off, I finally looked at what Mimi was watching... cooking videos on YouTube. YouTube isn't something I like the kids watching, but when she chooses cooking shows over those strange toy commercials (you know the ones, where kids watch someone else open a bunch of toys and play with them? They're weird but apparently popular.), I can't help but oblige her requests to learn to bake. Her current obsession is cupcakes. Elsa cupcakes, angry birds cupcakes, cupcakes with little bees on them... she wants to bake them all. So today, as promised, I told everyone I was booked up and went home to make cupcakes with my Mimi.
Attempting to use more of what I already have, we scoured the cupboards for the necessary ingredients, and the internet for a recipe. I wasn't happy with any of the ones I found, so I pulled out a cookbook I was given for Christmas called Living Freely Gluten Free and we set to work. (For those who don't know, I've been Gluten Free/Dairy Free for over a year due to some health issues that removing these two items from my diet solved for me. This doesn't mean I never eat gluten or dairy... I do, but I know it will have consequences, LOL). I have to say though, these cupcakes were perfect when we were finished. Even Noni said she wouldn't have known they were GF/DF if she didn't know they came from my house.
We made cupcakes. We made marshmallow fondant (surprisingly good shoulder workout). We made vegan buttercream frosting. We spent all afternoon baking, laughing and having a good time as a family (even though we sent Daddy & Gracie to the store to get dinner). Days like these, are the ones that refill my love for documentary photography. Even if I'm just taking pictures of half melted cupcakes.
It's amazing where time goes when you're jet setting around the world. Mr Kaysen and his parents spent the first few months of this year outside of Tokyo Japan for daddy's job. The leaps and bounds Kaysen made while he was gone, from crawling to walking and eating solid foods, made the time seem like he'd been gone forever.
I was lucky to be invited to photograph his Japan themed birthday party. From seaweed crackers to pot stickers, the food was incredible. This little man celebrated his birthday in style in his own little kimono outfit and dined on a delicious cake his mama made.

But realistically, I'm more of the hot mess mom. It's a good thing if I put on pants in the morning, because working from home allows me to be lazy. ;) My mom on the other hand, she's got an artsy-craftsy side that I might be able to tune into if I wasn't so focused on other things. This year she found these dyed eggs using rice. It was supposed to be less messy, and since I have a bit of a hoarder complex when it comes to baking supplies, I had the necessary billions of food dye colors so we could get every possible color we needed. Seeing these projects come to life is always a fun experiment and the girls always have a good time doing crafts with Noni. One thing to note if you do this, the eggs that were soaked in vinegar took the color better... all the way through the eggs. (I'm hoping to try this next year with homemade food coloring!)
Honestly, this is probably the biggest contest I'll ever enter. One because I'm lazy and two because it's a wonderful whirlwind to spice up a rather mundane month in the photography world. Let's be realistic. February is cold, dreary and really doesn't give us much (unless we're talking booty then there's boudoir and baby booties galore up in here!).
In 2017 I entered on a whim, not expecting to get anywhere with my images. There are literally thousands of AMAZING photographers out there who blow my work out of the water. But out of 50 images entered.... I had one in the top 20%, one in the top 30% and one image that made it to round 6 (out of 12). That's definitely not bad for a first year. These three were those winning images.
The anxiety of waiting for results is almost enough to drive a photographer insane. I'm not even sure anymore how far my images made it and won't have that info until at least March 19th. Tiffany entered a couple of images for Wink Wedding Collective as well as a few of her own. Fingers crossed, one of our Wink images made it to round 12 (we think there is one, but we can't be sure until the results are in!). Below are a few of my favorites that I entered into the 2018 contest.
The opening of Wink studio has been a huge opportunity for me to really grow and expand my availability to all of you lovely guys and gals. To celebrate, I've put together a Grand Opening Deal that won't be around for long!

It's not every day that you get to bring a celebrity into your studio, and lucky me, I have the ability to do it on the regular. Behold the amazing Carmie Cosplay as Ebony Jessica Rabbit.
An avid Disney fan, I just adore anything and everything Disney themed. From weddings to newborns to boudoir shoots, I've enjoyed every Disney Theme there is. But this one was something else. Arriving straight from Toon Town USA, Ebony Jessica Rabbit is a bombshell to behold in everything.... and right down to her skivvies. Carmie really pulled this one off. Starting with the gorgeous purple gown, she put on a real show with her vocals. A woman of many talents, she can sing.

When my Nana found out that I'd secured a studio in Tacoma, she asked to come model for me. While she may have very well been joking, I took her up on the chance to do what I'd so deeply regretted not asking to do before Papa died. I gave her a modern day portrait session.
It got me thinking, why is it we don't take more photos of our grandparents? Do you have either a modern or classic portrait of your parents or grandparents? I have photos of birthdays, anniversaries, etc. and thankfully, my grandpa insisted on getting their photos done every anniversary. Just a 5 minute, simple portrait but those mean the world to me.
We celebrate births with birth, fresh 48 and newborn photography. We celebrate first birthdays with cake smashes and portrait sessions. We celebrate kids growing up with school photos; graduation from high school with senior portraits; engagements, weddings, first anniversaries, women's empowerment. We celebrate all of these milestones over the course of our lives.... but when do we celebrate our seniors?
The truth is, we should celebrate them every single day. These are the men and women who raised us; who loved us at our worst and forgave our biggest mistakes. These are our parents and grandparents, the grandparents and great-grandparents of our children; the ones who gave us life, who picked us up when we fell down and sometimes the ones who laid there with us when we couldn't get back up. They deserve to be celebrated.
Going forward, my goal is to photograph 2-3 seniors a month. If you know someone who would enjoy (or not) a short session to help with my personal project, please shoot a message to [email protected]

I'm so excited that we can do these cute little setups now! With Valentine's Day just around the corner, what a perfect gift for Mom, Dad, or the Grandparents! I don't know about yours, but my parents are always asking for new photos of the grand kids. So get them dressed up and head into Wink Studio for a cutesy Valentine's Day mini session to show them you DO listen to your parents. ;)
Includes:
20 minute photography session
Two (2) 5x7 prints
Kids: Grab some cute Valentine's themed outfits, or even an adorable pair of Valentine's PJs! It seems the little ones get all the good cute outfits, so this should be a breeze! (And the perfect excuse to buy some new pjs for Junior.) Another option is similar to my kids pink and black "church" dresses. A little fancier but still perfect for these pink and red themed minis.
Pre-Teens & Teens: The best options here are the classic jeans and Valentines or white tee combo. Pair them with a jean jacket or cute vest for a classy, yet age appropriate look.
Moms & Dads: These are the hard ones! With so many amazing outfits, it can be hard to narrow down a look. If you have kiddos in graphic tees or super cutesy outfits, stick with neutral colors to balance out the cute and classic.

I was semi-unwillingly nominated to become the "official" Team Photographer for a Pop Warner Football team outside of Pacifica, California. Never in a million years did I dare to imagine that moment would take me this far. To tell the truth, I didn't want to believe that I could do this. I kept telling myself I wasn't ready, I didn't have the client base, I couldn't make it work. Then I met Tiffany, and she proved to be the other half of my brain. The part that says "You can do this. You will do this. You are doing this." So we made that leap.
And now, we have opened a gorgeous studio, located in the heart of downtown Tacoma's Theater District. We're steps from Dorkys, Matador and Firemen's park. I'm pretty sure there isn't anywhere better for us to be. Ironic, my mom used to work in one of these buildings, quite possibly the same one our studio is located in! I haven't taken enough photos of the studio setup, but without further ado..... here are the few I have!
Of course I had to include Tiffany in there too. ;) Watch for the announcement for the studio grand opening sale!
2017 was officially my craziest year yet. I would have to sit down and count how many different sessions I had, and that number is probably up over 100. Ain't nobody got time for that. But in the midst of all the crazy, I started to dream bigger. December rolled around, and the talk of securing an actual studio space quickly grew into a number one priority for Sashem Photography and I. But that's a post for another day.
January was officially my slowest month. A few boudoir sessions, and an anniversary session pretty much summed up my entire month. A lot of dreaming was done during January, but not a whole lot of doing. This was also the month I met Tessa of The Chittle Homestead, and was honored to photograph her gorgeous DIY kitchen remodel for The Perpetual You.
Another slow month, Tiffany and I tried to schedule a styled shoot that basically encompassed everything we loved. Weddings, Rock-n-Roll and Vintage thrift finds. Things fell apart at the last minute, but I was able to jump on the opportunity to join Lessie Blue Photography for an amazing wedding on the MV Skansonia. It was the start of a wonderful friendship and wedding season.
Sashem Photography and I finally manage to get that styled shoot in, and it turns out marvelous! I'm incredibly stunned with how well our styles mesh and blend together, and we begin to dream of a wedding collective.
Somewhere in here, wedding season starts. Things take off full speed ahead for my business and I'm busier than ever before. Almost every weekend I'm doing something either family related, or wedding related.
It doesn't stop. It doesn't slow down. It just keeps on trucking. By this point, Wink Wedding Collective has begun to take form and I'm scheduling winter mini sessions. We start looking a whole year out by this point and wonder how we're going to manage everything. Somewhere during this time, The Perpetual You launches it's print magazine, and I find myself falling in love with the whole collaboration, submitting photos to them left and right, and it brings me a new perspective on shooting for myself.
Things should have slowed down come October, but the truth is they didn't. Weddings continued right up until Christmas this year, concluding with the gorgeous Ben & Dagon at East King County Courthouse in Issaquah on December 22nd. Tiffany and I find a studio almost at the very last minute, and three years to the day I closed on my house, we got the call that we'd been approved to move into the studio.
Somehow, we survived. And this year, while things are shifting for us, doors keep opening. Here's to 2018.

Coming up with the words for this post is hard. I still struggle on a regular basis with loving myself and embracing my imperfections. If I tried, I could probably pick out half a dozen things in each of these photos that I dislike about them or myself. But I won't because that's not fair to the woman I am right now.
A close friend said "I think we get so caught up in how we’d like to look that we forget to appreciate where we are right now. We can love our “now” even if we are working towards future goals. Also we are our own worst critics. Those who love us see our inner and outer beauty...it’s important to capture it....life is painfully short at times." It's an incredibly honest view on what happens when we step in front of the mirror.
But stepping in front of the camera is somehow freeing. It's an incredible gift to get to see how someone else views you, even for just a moment in time. It's a moment all to yourself, to embrace your beauty, confidence, sexuality. For a moment, you're not just a mother/wife/daughter. You're a siren, a bombshell, the most magnificent creature to grace the earth.
After all. You were born to be real.

]]>It seems like there comes a time in every photographers "life" where they find they need a studio. This year, that time has come. Finding that perfectly beautiful white walled, well lit space is challenging. So Tiffany and I are hoping someone out there may be able to help. We've put together a short list of things we need our studio to have, and a longer list of things we'd love to have.
Our Bare-Necessities:
There is an entire generation of kids that were disappointed to learn of the world of Wizardry after their 11th birthday. I may have been one of them. (Ok. I probably was one of them). So when my girls and I were invited to our friends Harry Potter Party last October, I couldn't pass up the chance to go.
Jayne put an amazing amount of thought into this party. From homemade butter beer to some pretty exquisite wands (I still have mine), there wasn't a detail overlooked. Invitations even hung above the chimney searching out the elusive Harry. I'm truly in love with the beautiful details she put into her decorations and food!
The girls had a blast and still play with their (now broken and very Weasley-esque) wands. I really think that was the highlight of the night for those two.

Last year's "Anytime Mini Sessions" were such a hit that I'm bringing them back as Mid-Week Minis! I'm thrilled to offer two different looks for these sessions, urban and rural. Taking advantage of our amazing shops on Sumner's Main Street, we can stroll into Craft 19 and grab some coffee before window shopping on our way to Heritage Park. For a more rural setting, we'll meet up near Mama Stortinis (on the Puyallup side of East Main/Traffic Avenue) and take advantage of the beautiful River Walk.
Mid-Week Mini Sessions are $150+tax and include a 30 minute session, 10 image online gallery with digital downloads and print release at one of the two locations listed above. Sessions are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm, 4:40 pm and 5:20 pm. To get started, fill out the form below and I'll get back to you asap!!!

How many times do you come home at night and find your wife exhausted, hair in a messy bun, covered in child fluids and ready to completely collapse? But she's still cooking dinner, washing laundry, and cleaning up after the toddler for the 2183472343 time that day? It's a safe bet you still look at that woman and see the bombshell you married. I can promise you though, she probably doesn't feel like that same bombshell who wore those black stilettos, the mini skirt and that pretty lacy bra you love.
Guys (and gals) it's time to pamper your wives. September 18th is Wife Appreciation Day and (even though you shouldn't need one) a perfect excuse to gift your wife an experience that will make her feel like she's 20 again. The Complete Boudoir Experience will leave her feeling sultry, sexy and empowered. She'll arrive about an hour before her session and receive a truly pampering experience that enhances her natural beauty, including hair and makeup services by my hand selected makeup artist. Once she's been fully pampered, she'll join me for a good hour choosing outfits that make her feel fabulous and having a good time. The end result will leave her feeling beautiful both inside and out.
Purchase your wife a gift she'll thoroughly enjoy at https://squareup.com/store/llc_mj and let her know you appreciate her. Even if it's not Wife Appreciation Day.

It's not every day that you're able to get married the same day as the solar eclipse, and it's said that the day of the eclipse is a great day to start new things. Ashley and Joey chose to do just that and August 21st, 2017 was the perfect day for their marriage to begin. Marrying at Tolmie State Park provided a wonderful array of backdrops. The amphitheater was quiet and serene as their ceremony began, and their officiant drew a circle around them symbolizing their circle together. I loved getting to take part in their wedding, and truly hope they enjoy their reception back home in Minnesota! Congratulations you two!!
How many weddings have you attended where there is a dinosaur story nestled between "I do" and "You may kiss the bride"? My guess is, unless you were in attendance at Tarah and Bryan's wedding, probably zero. But that is exactly what happened during their ceremony.
This wedding was incredibly sweet. Surrounded by their closest friends and family, Tarah and Bryan shared their vows at the cozy Orting Manor, under a beautiful white chandelier hung from the arbor. From Tarah's beautiful dress with a layer of dusty rose tulle, to their choice of Disney songs for their Mother/Son ("Winnie the Pooh") and Father/Daughter ("You'll be in my heart") dances, every piece came together in to create a very unique wedding that was all their own. They even chose to forgo a traditional wedding cake and instead chose a 3 tier rice crispy treat cake. I am honored to have been able to witness their vows and wish Tarah and Bryan the very best in their marriage.
]]>Jackie, my forever twinsie, has had life hand her lemons in the past, but on August 27th, 2016 she tossed those lemons back as she married the love of her life in a small backyard ceremony. Surrounded by their family and friends, they pledged their lives to each other. Scott has stepped up and proves to be amazing to both my twinsie and her two children. Of course, being that their first anniversary is soon, they needed anniversary photos to celebrate! We chose to include the kiddos and turned this sweet anniversary session into a fun and spontaneous family session.
]]>Believe me, I hear you! Budgeting for a wedding is even harder especially during times when you're trying to fulfill your frilly white dress dreams while still being an adult and paying your bills. Have no fear, there ARE ways you can save some moolah and still have your dream wedding.
Schedule for the off season:
October through April are typically "slow" months in the wedding industry and you can score some killer deals on your favorite vendors, attire and venues. For instance, if you're getting married between November 2017 and February 2018, you can rest assured your wedding photography is covered with my Winter Wedding Special. An awesome 6 hours of photography coverage gives you the biggest bang for your buck, with two photographers arriving right as your hair and makeup are finished (or meeting you at the venue) to capture those getting ready images and leaving after you've tossed that bouquet and begun to party hard. ;) You'll still get all the "busy season" goodies: A USB, Personal Print Rights, and approximately 1000 digital images to download and go to town with. Did I mention the killer discount? A $1500 package for $950!
Other vendors, including the amazing Dawn Padgett of Seattle Bride Hair and Brittany Maxwell of Magical Moments by Maxwell, offer a discount on their services during the winter months. Seattle Bride Hair offers 15% off for wedding services during the winter months. Magical Moments by Maxwell offers a $200 discount on her day-of-coordination package. Many other vendors offer an amount or percentage off if you schedule during the off season. (You can contact either of them for exact details and to book!)
A few other budgeting tips:
Watch for the launch of Wink Wedding Collective in January 2018 as Markie Jones Photography, LLC joins forces with Sashem Photography to bring you the funnest wedding photography team in Washington!
Sometimes, in the middle of every day life, we run into one of "those" clients. The types who steal our hearts and instantly become one of our best friends. Craig and Amy are like that. I met Craig through a friend, and over the past year we've become good friends. When I asked them to join me in January at sunrise, it was not surprising at all that they got up at the butt-crack of dawn and drove all the way to Rattlesnake Lake just to appease my random crazy ideas. When they arrived, sweet Amy mentioned being tired, but they were going out for their anniversary. Shortly after, I found out why.... Amy was pregnant!
Of course, they asked if we could do their maternity session at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, after seeing the awesome wedding photos from there earlier this summer. So a morning of chit chat, wandering the zoo and attracting attention as they danced in front of a large fish sculpture, made for some pretty unique and memorable moments. Soon we will be welcoming their baby girl, and wouldn't you believe.... they aren't the only ones counting down the days to baby snuggles. ;) This photographer is too.

When I was called for Mari and Beau's July 30th wedding, there were only two weeks left to go. I didn't get the chance to get to know them like I usually do with my couples. But I knew these two were going to be wonderful when I arrived to find Beau looking handsome in a white and turquoise tux, all the tables adorned with beautiful bouquets, and her family members who welcomed me immediately. When Mari arrived, I headed in for getting ready photos. This was the first time I'd shot the bride getting ready in an RV, but it was incredible. Her dress was something straight out of my dreams. Three pieces (top, bottom and detachable train), each featured incredibly detailed rose appliques in several colors. The top alone was adorned with beautiful lace, white ribbon and the roses in purple, turquoise, blue, yellow and orange. Completing the look was her train, which stretched out 8-10 feet and also featured the gorgeous florals.
The excitement of the day mounted the closer the ceremony got. Seeing Beau's face as his beautiful bride walked down the aisle was amazing. And these two are such fun. They were game for anything Lessie and I asked of them, including a piggyback ride and dancing alone in the middle of the field. I'm looking forward to seeing these two grow together and hope they will visit Brookstom Creek and myself in the future.
Lessie of Lessie Blue Photography was an amazing teammate on Sunday and I look forward to many more wedding adventures with her in the future!
Walking into Angie and Jeremy's wedding felt like walking into a Hollywood movie set. From the handmade details to the vintage platters that adorned their two long rows of tables for guests, there was no feature that hadn’t been given the attention every Gatsby party deserved. The only thing missing was Gatsby himself, but he would have been proud of this party for sure.
A gorgeous follow up to Angie and Jeremy’s engagement session, their wedding was the stuff of dreams. Lights had been strung around the tops of the tables, and tealight lanterns hung from the trees. Angie herself could have walked straight out of Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie scene, with a vintage styled gown from David’s bridal and intricate hairpiece. Even the table décor had been hand-picked by Angie during various trips to visit friends. She stopped at vintage shops during her travels and found each unique item including some vintage crystal pieces.
Their entire ceremony was beautiful and they chose to water a tree that would be planted as their unity ceremony. It was a beautiful and wonderful event that their family and friends are sure to remember. Tiffany of Sashem Photography and I were truly honored to be a part of their special day.
]]>I met Belinda with Happy Camper Cocktail Company through The Rising Tide Society, when I reached out for vendors to feature on the blog. She filled out my form and then asked if I'd be willing to collaborate on a few shoots for her drink features in The Perpetual You online magazine (see more on our Published & Profiled page!). It gave me the opportunity to meet her in person and learn more about this amazing personality.
Happy Camper Cocktail Company is like nothing else. They mix and serve "farm to bar" or "garden to glass" cocktails made with Washington state sourced ingredients that wow in appearance and taste, straight from their one of a kind vintage camper bar. That's right, their bar is mobile, a 1966 Aladdin travel trailer turned bar. Painted all white, she always makes an impression while blending in seamlessly with any style decor. Many of their farm to bar ingredients are sourced at Simple Goodness Farm in Buckley, owned by Belinda's sister, making this a business a family affair.
The passion behind Happy Camper Cocktail Company runs deep into their housemade mixers, which are inspired by the seasons and full bounty Washington state has to offer agriculturally. Belinda takes pride in serving these garden to glass drinks and is endlessly inspired by creating menus to match each event. From PNW specific flavors like Marionberry and Huckleberry syrups, to classic cocktail mixers made the old way, the right way, like Grenadine from pomegranate juice, Belinda makes sure their bar mixers have thought, passion and flavor to spare.
Happy Camper Cocktail Company offers a variety of packages to fit every budget. The Marilyn package is the perfect bar package for a wedding, featuring three signature cocktails (including a welcome cocktail or special cocktail hour drink), beer on tap, poured wine, non-alcoholic beverages and of course, a champagne toast. All featured drinks are of your choosing, but Belinda will help you craft the menu to reflect your event's style and your tastes as a couple.
"Pick moments of your day that are important to you and your guests and make these things the highlights of your day, then let the rest go a little. Not every detail needs to be a painstakingly ornate production, but the things that will shine most for your guests and yourself on your big day are the meaningful and fun details that reflect you as a couple. For our service, we love to work with foodies, agriculture enthusiasts, crafters and makers, vintage lovers, wanderers & adventurers. They and their guests enjoy our services so much more because to them it isn't just a prop with a cocktail, it's a full circle experience and our little bar becomes the centerpiece of their evening."
You can find Belinda and Happy Camper Cocktail Company on Facebook, Instagram & their website.
]]>Last week, we packed up for an extended trip to Newport Oregon. I hadn’t stayed at this particular campground and it had been almost 6 years since mom, Emi & I had driven through on our girls road trip back to California where Emi & I lived at the time. Doing a bit of research before we left, I learned we were only minutes away from the Oregon Coast Aquarium; one that we’d stopped at on that road trip in July 2011. Knowing how close we were, mom made sure we planned to go visit. So we packed everyone up on Friday morning and headed out for lunch, then the aquarium.
Money can’t buy happiness but it sure can pay your way into an aquarium, which is kinda the same thing. The girls had a blast looking at all the fish, and touching the animals in the touch tank. Gracie tried to convince Opi that the anemone bit her, but really the spiky little guy just wanted to give her a “hug”. Some of the animals seemed very in tune to the people there, and one seal even tried to eat a gal’s purse through the glass. I’m excited to add some of these photos to our gallery wall at home and had a blast getting to watch the girls take it all in.
]]>July 4th of every year has been a bit emotional for me. Being a co-parent, holidays are shared and sometimes I wouldn’t have either of my kids. But July 4th has been “my” holiday every year for the past 7 years, and I’m forever grateful that I’ve been able to share this with both of my children. This year has made some major changes in the lives of my children, and each one, though rough at the turning point, has been for the betterment of their lives.
Tuesday, we set out in the morning for breakfast with Grammy April, then made our way to Les Grove Park in Auburn for their annual 4th of July festival. There were bounce houses galore, tons of food (it’s crazy how many events revolve around food), and vendors to suit every obsession. Of course, the girls wanted matching face paint, pony rides and super hero capes which have to be one of the coolest things I found there and totally worth the price tag to see my kids’ faces when I said they could each pick one out.
The day ended pretty much how our 4th of July always ends. BBQ brats and fireworks bought at the Bonney Lake High School stand. I love the simplicity and slowing down to enjoy my little family.
]]>Every single person on the planet has probably heard that saying, and there are many couples who've modeled it in the past. This weekend, I was given the pleasure of photographing one of those couples who's connection truly shines through their friendship and love. My team and I discussed it later, realizing we'd never laughed that often or that hard at a wedding. These two were so much fun to photograph, between Steve's antics and Amy's stunning smile, we couldn't have asked for a better couple last weekend.
Amy and Steve had been together for 13 years before tying the knot. Surrounded by their friends and family, they proclaimed their love in a short and sweet ceremony at Hunter Family Farms in Olympia. Their rustic wedding was incredible and even after the morning overcast skies had me concerned, Mount Rainier stood proud in the background of their ceremony.
Amy & Steve together helped to make their wedding day eco-friendly as well. Floral centerpieces served as wedding favors, ready to be taken home and planted in guest's gardens. Amy's bouquet, along with the boutonnieres worn by Steve and Mike (the officient), were wooden flowers from Eco Flower and they smelled delightful. The majority of their decor was rented from Rustic Receptions, ensuring the reuse of the items. Steve even came up with a wonderfully eco-friendly guest book: Every guest had their photo taken in front of a homemade pallet backdrop and images will be placed into a digital frame where they can be viewed every single day.
Amy & Steve's day was chock full of wonderful memories and moments, one that Tiffany, Alaina and I will for sure remember for years to come. Amy & Steve, thank you for having us. We wish you the best in your next adventures.
]]>We all need a little edgy rock in our lives. For Tiffany of Sashem Photography, it comes in the form of her 4 year old singing Death-Metal Lullabys. For Me, it's more of a dull roar in the background that binds my personality together. Between the two of us, we knew we needed a little more rock in our lives and Tiffany birthed the idea of this elopement.
It started by looking for something more edgy than many of the styled shoots we'd seen recently. We both love a good styled shoot to fill in the blank spaces of the winter months, but each one we came across held a hefty price tag and the restrictions on them didn't sit well with either of us. We started with the dress, one Tiffany had her eye on for a while and I happened to have purchased last summer for another shoot and ended up not using it. The shoes came from my closet and the couple were introduced to us through a mutual vendor-friend I had met the previous year through The Rising Tide Society and The Perpetual You.
Alisha & Josh were perfection. He had the hipster-spunk we were looking for, and she resembles a gorgeous tattooed mermaid. Together they completed our vision for this session and brought it to life with a love that runs incredibly deep. The time we spent with them was full of laughter, smiles and excitement. You'd never know the entire thing had been staged.
From the detail shots we took in the old Graffiti Garage, to the dancing in the courtyard and followed up with a visit to Firemen's Park in Tacoma, this styled shoot really allowed Tiffany and I to connect through our photography, both as individuals and as a team. I look forward to many more real weddings and styled shoots with this brilliant woman!
]]>Chances are, you've spent a good chunk of your wedding budget on your photographer and you want to make the most of your photography. These memories aren't going to make themselves, and while the majority of professional photographers are awesome at rolling with the punches, this handy list of questions to ask yourself or your coordinator during your final venue walk-through will help set your photography team off on the right foot (pun totes intended).
If you've chosen to get ready at your wedding venue, that's great! It cuts down on travel time and allows you to gain those extra 10/15/25 minutes of photography to capture every little detail.
Lighting is key and we love window light around here. If there's a window with sheer curtains in your prep area, be sure to make yourself a note to keep it clear. If you can't, or the venue has a table/furniture in front of it, find out if we'll be able to move that piece the day of. We promise to put it back! ;)

3) Will you be able to enter & exit the preparation area without your guests seeing you? Many brides do not wish for their guests to see them before their ceremony. Plus, if you can enter and exit your prep area or bridal suite at the venue without being seen, it helps avoid the guests who are dying to wish you well with long conversations when you really just want to go pee before your walk down the aisle.
If you're wanting photos of your attendants or groom getting ready, it's essential that we know where this is happening. I almost always shoot with a second photographer, which makes it easy to split up if your groom is getting ready elsewhere.
Let's face it. This is Washington. It rains in the middle of Summer and snows in June sometimes (ok. Maybe once, like 20 years ago but still). You'll want to be sure and have a designated backup plan, even if there's a 110% chance of sunshine on your wedding day. Canopies, Indoor Ceremony, something to fall back on if needed. The piece of mind is worth the extra 5-10 minutes of planning.
In order to get those beautiful shots of your ceremony space before your guests arrive, you'll want to give us a general idea of when and how they'll show up. If they're coming into a designated space, that lets us know we can wait a bit longer to head out to the ceremony spot and take those photos. If your guests will file directly into the ceremony space, we'll want to get those images early as possible.
While most Summer ceremonies will take place well before sunset (hello 9:00 pm sunsets!), if you're scheduled for a late fall/winter/early spring wedding, you may want to light the paths/aisle or outdoor reception area with string lights, lanterns or other lighting.
While I've never personally run into this, I've heard stories from other photographers who've been restricted to one spot during ceremonies. If your venue requires that your photographer and everyone stay seated, consider positioning one photographer on each side with a reserved front row seat. This will give them the best view of your ceremony for those moments. You may also consider asking about a third photographer just for your ceremony to place at the back of the space.
Your couples and formal portraits are usually the most requested photos from the day, and the ones that take up the most time. Having a designated area (whether its the reception space or another spot for cocktail hour) for your guests to go will help to keep them corralled and move your formal portraits along. If you'll need to leave the venue for couples and formal portraits, be sure to consider where you'll want to get these shots done.
If you're having a cocktail hour, be sure to note where this will take place and if there is any exclusive decor that won't be present in the reception space.
I highly suggest placing your photographers and vendors at a table near you & your new husband/wife. This allows you to be able to quickly grab them when Great Aunt Sue comes over for a photo in the middle of dinner.
If you're feeding your vendors, consider having them jump in line right behind you. Or if serving a plated meal, remind your catering staff to serve them immediately after you. This will help to keep your wedding photography timeline on schedule without having to deal with cranky hangery photographers. ;)
It's always good for us to know where the DJ/Band is setup and what lighting they bring. DJ lights can be a ton of fun during receptions and we always like to know if there is any uplighting or if we'll need to set up our additional lighting equipment.
Photo booths are huge successes! We simply need to know where to set it up so your guests can see it but don't trip over anything.
When Alisha mentioned wanting to have her maternity photos done at Simple Goodness Farm in Buckley, my heart literally leapt at the thought. I'd had my eye on Simple Goodness Farm for several months and it had been years since my last visit for their annual Garlic & Goats festival. Alisha's session would be the prime opportunity and excuse to visit this working Farm in Buckley.
I arrived at Simple Goodness Farm a bit early, and met up one of the wonderful Simple Goodness Sisters, Venise. I've worked with Belinda, the owner of Happy Camper Cocktails and other Simple Goodness Sister, in the past, so of course I was delighted to finally meet the other half of this incredible duo.
Alisha & Josh arrived right on time and we made the trek out through the cow pasture to the far end of the field. The sunlight was gorgeous and Alisha was simply radiant. Josh looked mighty handsome and you could tell he is super in love with Alisha. Kinsley wasn't having it though, so we made quick work of their session, to keep Kinsley happy, and with the help of a few photobombing cows (including the over-pregnant Mama) and a few bubbles helped tide her over a little bit. She would have much rather played with Mama cow though.
Alisha & Josh may look familiar as they modeled for the collaborative styled shoot with Sashem Photography back in March. These two seriously radiate love and their bond grows every day. Welcoming their second baby is going to be a complete joy for anyone who witnesses it. Watching these two lovebirds and getting to celebrate their little one with them is always enjoyable and I look forward to seeing their family in years to come.
]]>I love getting to learn from other photographers and being able to photograph them. It's quite rare to be in front of the camera versus behind it, and many photographers don't get in front of it often enough. It's been a goal of mine to photograph as many photographers as possible, so when Sarah stepped up and offered Kenny and herself as models for a class assignment, I was thrilled to have them join me.
Sarah runs her own photography business while raising their little one and tending the farm they own. Her husband Kenny, is pretty much head over heels for his woman, and these two were quite fun to photograph. Sarah told me about her wedding and how she did her own wedding photos, while Kenny just smiled and nodded.
The assignment for their session was part of a Moment Design training I was taking with Jesh De Rox. Using these prompts and watching the connection between the two of them was an extraordinary experience. I'd also never shot a couple in studio before, so this was a whole new ballgame. The simplicity of their session really helped bring out the connection and love between the two of them.

I first met Lessie at last April's Windmill Garden Styled Shoot hosted by Rebecca Anne Photography and Holcomb Weddings & Events. Lessie was bubbly and energetic; which of course automatically drew me to her. She thinks outside the box and comes up with creative angles and ideas. Almost a full year later, I was able to join her for a wedding, and it reinforced how wonderful this lady is. I truly enjoyed spending time with her and am thankful to be able to call her a friend.
Our day started with the trek to Seattle. Lessie and I met up in our hometown of Sumner, and thankfully, the drive north wasn't super packed. We left incredibly early and were able to grab some coffee and chat... two of my favorite things to do. From there, we headed over to Seattle's Roosevelt Hotel. This place was extraordinary. The reception area was alike a quaint speakeasy with a modern twist. Leather chairs, a velvet couch and dozens of mirrors really gave the place a unique vibe. And the rooms were simply stunning. The light was absolutely gorgeous inside and made for wonderful detail shots.
Stephanie and Mike were simply adorable together. Joined by their one groomsman (Stephanie's son), Mike and I walked down to Westlake Center where we waited (not so) patiently for their first look. I positioned Mike towards me before Stephanie and Lessie rounded the corner, and was elated to see how thrilled Stephanie looked when she first saw Mike. These two had such wonderful chemistry and completely trusted Lessie's vision. Once we were finished, we headed out to Gasworks Park for family and couples portraits. The rain decided to make an entrance as soon as we arrived, so hauling gear and umbrellas we took cover in one of the large buildings. Finding fun areas to shoot through was an interesting challenge. But Stephanie and Mike just rolled with it, and their portraits turned out wonderful.
The MV Skansonia was only a few blocks away, and arriving on board, I was stunned at how gorgeous the interior was. Pictures simply don't do this venue justice. The MV Skansonia is a retired ferry permanently docked on North Lake Union. The vintage nautical decor gives the venue a very classic vibe and was an amazing accent to Stephanie and Mike's vision. From the playing card favors to the beautifully adorned cake, everything felt like walking into an old Hollywood movie.
Their ceremony vision was one I'd never heard before. Instead of the traditional ceremony style, where the alter is in front of all the guests, Stephanie and Mike invited all of their guests to gather around. They stood in the center while their most important friends and family circled around them, and the love that flowed was palpable. They read vows they'd written each other, exchanged rings and shared their first kiss. Between the ceremony and reception, we managed to sneak them away to the upper deck with gorgeous views of the Seattle Skyline. A few quiet moments and then it was time to party.
Their reception began with their introduction, then dinner and toasts. The Mother of the Groom sang, while another guest played the guitar. This group was a fun bunch to watch, as they held their battery operated candles in the air, rock concert style. This was a perfect start to my 2017 wedding season. A huge thank you to Lessie of Lessie Blue Photography for allowing me to join her.

I've always found it to be an honor when I'm asked to photograph a friends wedding. I'm definitely not the type that would rather attend a wedding than photograph it, and you can be certain it's very likely I will have my camera on me at my own wedding (should that ever happen) no matter what other people think. It's simply who I am.
This particular wedding, I'd waited a long time for. I met Summer when I did girl scouts with her sister, Tiffany. When she was graduating from Bonney Lake High School, her dad asked me to photograph her senior photos. I'd barely started my business and she was the first senior I ever photographed, but they insisted on paying me with a Red Robin Gift Card. It was the best dinner I'd ever earned. After that, Summer and I really became friends, and over the past 8 years she's introduced me to several wonderful people and I've watched her grow into an extraordinary young woman. So of course, when she asked me to be her wedding photographer, I was ecstatic and had to try really hard not to cry. (Because we all know I look like a Bad-@$$ but I'm really really soft in the middle. :P )
Summer introduced me to Michael around 2012/2013. I'd heard plenty of stories about him before that, but wasn't prepared for the super quiet, seemingly shy young man she brought to their session. He barely talked to me, maybe cracked one joke the whole time, and was incredibly low-key. I just couldn't get much out of him, though they were both thrilled with those photos. Now, I honestly can't get him to stop talking. The banter starts the moment I walk up and their wedding day was nothing like that very first session. What really stood out to me on Sunday was the way he supported Summer. Anytime a hitch or hiccup would start to worry her, Michael was right there offering comfort, support and loving words. To him, it didn't matter how the day went. I'm sure they could have gotten married in street clothes on the corner somewhere and he would have been content. His love for Summer really shined through and it was difficult for me to keep my emotions in check around these two. They are so in love and so very perfect for each other.
Their wedding day really encompassed everything these two stood for. From the music they chose (Somewhere over the Rainbow) to the delicious bacon wrapped dates, the thought that was put into each and every detail was exquisite. Summer's dress made her look like a Disney Princess, but her light blue converse gave her that rock-n-roll edge she's always had. Their North Pacific Aquarium Ceremony was simple and sweet, even the shark teeth were dressed to the nines with rose and greenery garlands. But what is a Point Defiance Zoo wedding without animal encounters? Siesta the Sloth and an adorable little hedgehog made appearances during the reception for a truly unique experience. Their entire day was truly amazing and I am forever thankful I was able to be a part of it.
As always, it's a pleasure working with my team: Tiffany and Alaina of Sashem Photography are two of the best women I could have asked to photograph this wedding with me. You two rock. Thank you for being simply amazing. <3

Our family has had a tradition since I was a kid. Disneyland vacations. We started going when the Magic Kingdom had one single hotel, one park and the fantastical light parade. Buzz Lightyear hadn't had his debut, It's a Small World wasn't the most annoying song on the planet, and Moana probably wasn't even a spark in her creators brain yet. My very first Disney trip was around 1988, I was about 18 months old. Since then, our family has visited the home of Mickey Mouse almost yearly, only skipping years a few times here and there. I even requested my exhusband and I honeymoon there when we got married; I love the place so much. (In case you're wondering, we totally did).
Thankfully, this tradition has continued over to my tiny family. Even after my divorce, I made taking Emi to Disneyland a huge priority. With the addition of Gracie, the cost has risen, but so has my drive to continue taking them every year. It's our special time every year, where I completely leave the office (and sometimes the cameras) behind to solely concentrate on my daughters and their childhood joy. It's probably also the only time during the year where I'm not watching every episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or listening to Frozen half dozen times a week. ;)
When we visited the Mouse's house last December, I decided to try something new. With a bag full of old 35mm film, my old Pentax K1000 and a 50mm lens, I decided to photograph a Disneyland Day entirely on film. This was an incredibly unique experience for me, as it's been years since I really worked with my pentax for more than a few frames at a time. I was grateful that I had my gear though, as we got to do things no one had done before this year. With the train down for construction, the park had opened up the New Orleans Station and kids were allowed to go back behind the train, play inside it and even pull the horn.
The downside to film is I can put the exposed rolls away and forget about them. So as it stands, I didn't get my photos back until about a month ago. On the other hand, it was a joy to get to relive those memories months after they'd happened. I guess you could say film photography is a win-win.

For the Bride
Prepare your wedding day attire the night before, and set it next to your front door. A quick list of items to prep:
For the Groom
It's likely you're a bit more low maintenance, but here are the things you'll want to have set aside:
Other items
These are sometimes overlooked items that should definitely be taken care of the day before:
Every love story is beautiful, but this is my favorite...
Once upon a time, a young woman went to a bar on post, because it was the only bar she could get into at 20 years old. While there, she met a young man, stationed far away from home. Before she left, she gave him her phone number on the back of her boss's bank deposit slip. 7 months later, those two were married. And 37 years later, they're still married.
Why is this my favorite love story? Because that young woman is my mom, and the young man is my dad. She grew up in the same area we all live now, while he had been stationed at Fort Lewis (currently known as JBLM) when they met. 37 years, two kids, and (now!) three grandkids later, they're still in love.
]]>Almost a year ago, my grandpa lost his battle with pneumonia. He'd fought hard for a good 6 months but it had been a rough battle and he was tired. The day our family said our final "see you later" to him, I commented to my mom through tears: "You watch. Every time someone dies in the family, someone ends up pregnant." While she laughed through her own tears, I'm not sure she actually believed me.
Three months later, my brother and sister-in-law announced her pregnancy. And 25 days before the 1 year anniversary of Papa's death, little Mr. Kaysen arrived on the scene. He's completely stolen the heart of every woman in our family and I cannot begin to describe the joy and love this little guy has brought everyone.
A tiny little thing, at just over 7 lbs, he's simply adorable. I was allowed the honor of being both his Auntie and the photographer for his Fresh 48 and newborn sessions. I can't wait to see what an amazing human being this little guy turns out to be. But for now, I'm content with getting in all those baby snuggles.
]]>Matt & Miranda joined the church I attend shortly before being married there. Their eldest, Caden, wasn't quite a year old when Miranda learned that Carson would soon be joining them. I've been blessed to photograph their family on more than one occasion, not including church functions. Caden is an expressive little man, and such an adorable big brother; even he was more interested in playing with his Star Wars Hot Wheels, he helped me "fluff" the baby poser and arrange the cute little outfit his mama bought his baby brother.
Carson was just over two weeks old and wide awake during his session. Sometimes babies don't want to follow our instructions and that's ok! It was wonderful seeing all his little expressions, including his mad gangsta face. This adorable little guy was patient as I wrapped, unwrapped and changed his outfit. Seeing him with mama was wonderful. She is so full of love for her littlest man. And dad was pretty proud too.
Dawn Padgett is one amazing woman. She's a hair & makeup artist in Tacoma, owner of Seattle Bride Hair and it just so happens, she's been put in charge of my own hair this year. Several weeks ago she asked me to photograph a styled shoot with her, using the same dress designer that had designed her own wedding dress. When finding the perfect model proved to be a bit difficult, the designer at Wai-Ching Studio stepped up and offered to model her own designs.
Talk about pressure. Just kidding!
Chrissy arrived at the salon and Dawn explained her vision. It was total rock-n-roll and stole my heart immediately. Dawn faux-hawked Chrissy's gorgeous long locks, and created the perfect look for the shoot. Of course, when Chrissy presented the dress she'd chosen as the main feature, I fell in love all over again. Needless to say, I need to grow my hair out and have a party just so I can rock this look and dress too.
]]>I'll be honest, this is only the second fresh 48 I've ever photographed, but both of them stole special spots in my heart. Yesterday, at 2:14 am, Baby Kaysen joined his mama and daddy in this world. I was the lucky auntie to get the text message shortly after in the wee hours of the morning.
The trip into St. Joseph Hospital seemed to take forever, even though the hospital is only a 40 minute drive from my home office. But 40 minutes and a 12 floor elevator ride later, I was finally able to meet the little guy. 10 fingers, 10 toes and a perfect little nose. I fell in love immediately.
Mimi was thrilled when I picked her up after school to take her to meet Kaysen. She was able to sit and hold him, with Uncle Michael's help. The family is ecstatic about little Kaysen's arrival. Congratulations to Michael & Macauley.
]]>When Tiffany, of Sashem Photography, told me about this wedding... I may or may not have legit squealed. (Ok. I admit it, I totally did). Let's be serious, I'm a complete sucker for a good offbeat wedding, and this spooktacular spectacle delivered more than I could have dreamed of.
Arriving at Lake Lawrence Lodge, I had no idea what I was in for. The quaint little lodge sits back where most people wouldn't venture. Surrounded by homes, it appears to be a members only community center, but they rent out for weddings and events. Inside I found the place decorated in pumpkins, masquerade masks, spiders and even a skeleton bride and groom complete with caskets. From I do to death beds all in one night huh?
Taking it all in was a feat in itself. There was something new in every nook and cranny. Vintage monster movies, Halloween crafts, a photobooth with some seriously amazing props (a vintage TV? You got it!) and a candy bar fit to thrill your inner fat kid (who said caramel apples are just for kids...). Christina and Edward left no detail forgotten. They seriously thought of everything, including the music and giant moon from my all time favorite movie.... The Nightmare before Christmas.
Then... the guests arrived. The mad hatter, Gumby, Zombie Elsa & Zombie Anna. A unicorn, a princess.... Jack Skellington. Everyone played along and wore their costumes. Including yours truly and the Sashem Photography Team, who were dressed like cats of course. The moment came after the ceremony and portraits when I thought this wedding couldn't get ANY better. That is the moment Christina chose to reveal her costume by adding beautiful white Angel wings to her gorgeous white wedding gown.
All in all, this wedding was definitely memorable and will be one to "haunt" our wedding dreams for years to come. Huge thanks to Sashem Photography for allowing me to second shoot with her. I look forward to another Halloween Wedding with her this year!
]]>My brother and (now) sister-in-law were getting married and trusted me to do a wonderful job on their engagement. I worked with her brother to provide an awesome set of images for the two of them. My business had barely started, and theirs was one of the first engagement sessions I photographed that year. Now, here we are a whole 5 years later. When they announced her pregnancy, I immediately asked them to keep me in mind to photograph their maternity session. When they were ready (YAY!!) we managed to squeeze it into the already busy baby prep schedule and ended up with a wonderfully fun session.
]]>When I teamed up with Tiffany of Sashem Photography, we knew that the rock-n-roll style needed something seriously different as far as the "cake". At first, the idea seems a bit shocking. WHAT KIND OF A WEDDING DOESN'T HAVE CAKE????? But after a rather insane turn of events that morning (aka: arriving at the bakery to find they'd sold out of cakes already, whoops!) and some seriously creative thinking, we ended up with a pretty awesome dessert bar that could easily be multiplied for larger weddings!
Here's the fun part.... we styled this dessert bar using items Tiffany found at local thrift stores. The glass cake plate was a piece she already owned, and she picked up several different size records to use for "plates". Wandering Dolce Si while Tiffany was out thrifting, I found these AMAZING swan pastries. Whoever came up with this idea was pretty brilliant. Since there wasn't a "cake" available, I chose two of the swans and a fruit and creme filled Paris Brest (for those of you who are gluten free, I feel for you, but rest assured you could totally eat these. Dolce Si has a whole bunch of delicious gluten free goodies, including the pastries I purchased. WIN!!) along with three of my new favorite cookie: the macaroon. Imagine my surprise when I bit into the third one (because let's face it, I bought it to eat immediately) and found it was filled with delicious apricot jelly. Yum.
Once we arrived on the scene, we placed the Paris Brest and swans together on the largest record setting them on the cake plate. The macaroons joined the party, placed on a smaller record. For larger parties, consider a vintage tin lined with dozens of macaroons, and select several cake stands to line with swans. Adorn your display with lace, beautifully soft velvet and some pretty scattered flowers. Then sit back with confidence, knowing no one will miss the cake.
]]>Even before I'd met him. He was this teeny tiny little thing, trying to climb out of a laundry basket. The thought he could once fit in said laundry basket is a bit shocking now. Just over a year old and weighing about 80 lbs, my boy is a gentle giant.
]]>When I started searching for houses after my divorce, my goal was a farm. At least 2 acres, a place for chickens, a barn, a garden and maybe a horse, or at least a goat. As the birth of Miss Gracie neared, I knew that wasn't going to be attainable at the time. So I settled for a small plot of land (less than 1/3 acre) in a subdivision outside of Bonney Lake. (For those who know me personally, you know this house is about 200 feet from the house I grew up in). The house isn't big. The lot isn't big. But we definitely have some big plans for it. My goal is to document those things here. A few of the plans we have are:
There's a spot on the side of our home that is perfect size for a greenhouse and garden. Last year I received some beautiful raised planters from a wonderful client of mine, Chuck's Planter Boxes, who also happens to be the maker of the two planters on my front porch. These will be placed in the greenhouse when it's built.
One of the downsides of rushing through home buying is that I didn't consider the fact my house plan didn't include a pantry or mudroom. Instead there's a small back hallway that's taken up by the washer and dryer, which isn't big enough for the two very large dogs we have to get in out of the rain. So plans are being made for a mud room off the back of the house, where the washer and dryer will move and space for the pups to come in out of the cold will be made. The current back hall will be converted to a walk through pantry.
Really this is more like a simple "face lift" for my kitchen. Eventually I would love to fully replace the kitchen, but for now I'm focused on a better faucet for my sink, a locking wine cabinet in the island, and replacing the lighting fixtures to help with my food photos.
In an effort to bring a little more country to our suburban home, the front porch will be replaced with a large covered front deck and stairs the length of the deck leading up to the front door. Some place to put a small porch swing, my small planter boxes and a beautiful welcoming entrance.
One day, we will probably sell this adorable little place, but right now, we're going to make it the perfect little home.
]]>Angie contacted me via Facebook at the very end of last year, looking for a wedding photographer. She'd seen an ad I'd placed in a group and loved my work. Upon meeting her, I was instantly drawn to her personality. Very outgoing, upbeat and enthusiastic, she explained all of her wedding plans including the large wedding party of her best friends from all over the US. It's going to be an amazing summer wedding, and I'm thrilled she's chosen me to capture it.
I met Jeremy for the first time at their engagement session. This very quiet, reserved man took a few moments to open up. But part way through the session, it was obvious he was enjoying himself. His antics brought out some of the biggest smiles and laughs from Angie, and connection between these two really shined through. They balance each other and together they're going to be a force to be reckoned with. I cannot wait to be present, cameras in hand, on their special day.
]]>Craig and I met through a mutual friend, and in just short of a year have become good friends. I love the way he talks about his wife, and how wonderful she is, so when I finally managed to get these two to agree to a photo shoot, I was ecstatic to meet her. She was every bit as lovely as he'd described. Listening to the two of them tell their engagement story was one of the sweetest, most hilarious moments I'd had in a long time. While I don't remember the details, there was something about a bra and the dog having ate it. Yikes. But the two of them were perfect together. During their session, Amy mentioned she'd been feeling a little off lately, and I was even more thrilled to get the message a few days later that soon, they would be adding another two feet to their family.
]]>It's really hard to believe that it's been almost 20 days since I returned from my last trip to Nevada. I'm set on finding somewhere new to visit next month within Washington. A trip out to Forks sounds like it's in the mix, but for now.... let's just enjoy this gorgeous Nevada skyline.
]]>I hit my goals hard in 2016, and as a result lost focus on a lot of other daily things. Finding a balance hasn't been easy. Being sick almost constantly on top of it wasn't helpful either. And that's the thing, aside from a handful of times in the past 8 years, I really hadn't been sick. Well, at least not until December of 2015.
I spent a lot of time visiting my grandpa in the hospital during November 2015 and then the rehabilitation center that December. It seemed as though I started to constantly get sick. First one cold, then another, and a flu, and another cold. By May 2016, when I hit wedding season full force, I had spent the majority of the months before fighting numerous colds and a couple of migraines. Each trip to the doctor resulted in another round of antibiotics, which we all know is not a fun, or healthy thing. (Let's not discuss the time I went to the doctor for a cold and came down with the flu two days later, less than 48 hours before Tonya & Mark's wedding! YIKES!). Along with that, my eating went downhill, and I was existing solely on tacos, pizza, pringles, boxed foods, milk duds and monster energy drinks. Having been the girl who gave up most dairy and all processed foods in 2011 to make her own bread, pizza dough, cake mixes, brownies and pancake mix, this diet wasn't friendly at all. Within a year and a half, I gained 20lbs, and by the end of January I had a migraine that wouldn't cease without heavy doses of pain killers.
If I was going to be top notch and survive wedding season this year, giving my clients the images and experiences they deserved, I needed to change things around! But these changes can't happen overnight. It's impossible for me to wake up one morning and decide, I'm going to do a complete overhaul, without some pretty nasty side effects. I did, however, formulate a plan for my life changes.
I started going back to the chiropractor and allowing myself some major self care without the guilt of taking time or resources from other parts of my life. I set a goal to work out five days a week, even if it's short workouts (which are awesome! Check out Seven for the iPhone. It's a bunch of 7 minute workouts, with the ability to create your own, set a higher number of circuts, etc). Since there are suspected food allergies, I'm ditching gluten, dairy and (eventually) sugar for at least the month of March. This is the hardest part of the whole plan. I'm a carb lover. I love fast food (Seriously, bring me tacos any day, or pizza. I'll eat a whole pizza if given the chance), but the majority of fast food places don't use gluten-free flours or alternative dairy-free cheeses. Bugger.
I can do this. And by the time wedding season rolls around this year (We start in MAY! Whoop whoop!) I'm going to be feeling a heck of a lot better than I have in the past 12 months! Let's hit it hard!

Ok. You're right. That isn't a rooster, it's a silky chicken. But at the time of publishing..... it's the closest I had.
According to China Highlights Website the Rooster is 10th in the Chinese zodiac and this year is a "Fire Rooster Year". They tell us that the Fire Rooster is "trustworthy, with a strong sense of timekeeping and responsibility at work." This whole idea makes me a little jealous of those Fire Roosters, since my timekeeping skills aren't the best. Since I'm a "Fire Tiger", I'm optimistic that 2017 is going to be a wonderful year for the lot of us.
Like pretty much everyone else on God's green earth, 2017 brings some new goals to the mix for this gal. Because I'm determined to remain accountable, I'm going to be giving you a glimpse into my "normal" life (the term normal being used loosely here) and updating with blog posts. Scary stuff is right.
My first goal is pretty generalized for both business and personal. I've set up a posting schedule for my blog, social media and updating the email newsletter list each month. I'll be spending some time over the next couple of weeks, putting together a consistency calendar for my home life, including things like which days of the week we'll eat out, which weekends are scheduled with at home activities and which nights I'm grocery shopping. Then the goal is to follow the plan for a whole year. The steps to accomplish this are:
Create a monthly newsletter template with information relevant to each month
Create a social media schedule for Facebook, Instagram & the blog
Brainstorm ideas for 2 blog posts per month in addition to client features
This second goal is strictly business related. I am aiming to grow my business enough to transition from working two jobs (my current full time job, plus running my photography business), to focusing solely on my photography and serving the amazing clients I've gathered and continue to meet on a regular basis. The biggest thing here for me, is getting over the fear of not having a regular salary and relying on my own business and skills to keep my family in a positive financial status. The steps I'll need to do to accomplish this are:
Saving 3 months of liquidatable assets
Have sessions booked 3-6 months in advance
Shoot 20 weddings as the lead shooter this year
Begin booking 2018 weddings
The last goal has two very distinct parts to it; business and personal. On the personal side of things, I need to minimize the amount of "things" I've collected over the years and continue to collect. The best action steps for this side of it are:
Declutter kitchen, family room & bedrooms
Donate, sell or trash unused items
Upgrade storage organization systems (cabinets & shelving)
Organize all remaining items into "homes" and remove anything I don't have room for.
The business side of things is a bit less daunting and complicated. Mainly, I'm streamlining my business to better service my customers. Instead of having dozens of choices for sessions, weddings or products, I've sat down and focused my services. Sessions will include 3 different types of sessions; Moments, Documentary & Adventure. Weddings will have 3 collections to choose from, all based on time. Products will be limited to gift prints (either loose or boxed with USBs), signature books and albums.
The thriving part is easy. Once the decluttering is done, I can focus on making the most of my business and space to support my family and my amazing clients! I am truly looking forward to seeing where 2017 leads us and taking some epic adventures with everyone!
These beautifully unique venues are two "sister venues" in downtown Sumner, Washington. Decorated beautifully for the Christmas Season, both of these hidden gems boast gorgeous indoor waterfalls, giant cozy fireplaces and a romantic Hollywood ambiance. With 23 years in business, these indoor venues are architecturally stunning and brides will only ever need to bring in minimum decor for their events. Sparked by the process of planning one of their daughter's weddings, the family realized how much they loved planning events and how much Sumner needed more indoor venue options.
"I would tell brides to stop and really enjoy themselves and dwell in all of their hardwork. I always tell brides to surround themselves with amazing vendors that they trust so everything runs seamless the day-of and they can relax." - Barbara
I generally start the day with a pot of coffee, or a Starbucks run for a Venti Skinny Vanilla Latte with Almond Milk. I wasn't always like this, and from time to time I've actually tried to swear off coffee. Sometimes, I can last a whole two days.... but usually it's less than 4 hours (excluding when I'm sleeping. That whole 6 hours I go without coffee. It's an accomplishment, really). Sure, I'll drink diet coke, water and juice, but coffee is seriously the life elixir that keeps me going.
99.999999% of my client meetings start with coffee. I love meeting at a local coffee shop (who's tried Craft 19 in Sumner? No one? Let's meet there!) to discuss your wedding day plans. It's always more comfortable than having a stranger come to your house, or some stuffy little corner of a studio somewhere. Instead we'll meet near you (or your venue!) and chat about everything you're looking for while enjoying the sounds, smell and delicious taste of heaven.
There are a few things you'll want to bring with to your consultation! Questions for me. Your wedding day plans. And a thirst for a great cup of coffee.

I met Tonya in junior high choir. I don't remember how or why we became friends, but I do know that if you'd told those two 13/14 year olds that in about 17 years, she would be getting married and I'd be there to witness it; we'd have totally agreed with you. Had you told us I'd be photographing it? It's likely we would have given you a strange look and walked away. I "had no artistic ability" and was convinced I'd be a veterinarian, or maybe a famous singer.
I can't tell you how THRILLED I was when Tonya asked me to photograph her wedding to the love of her life, Mark. (Face it: It's fate. Mark/Markie? Yep. Fate.) Not a single road is completely clear of bumps, and neither was theirs. Life likes to throw curve balls. Including, me getting sick at 6 am the day before the wedding.
Rain, snow, sleet, hail, hellfire, or flu.... Nothing was stopping me from getting to Tonya and Mark's Urban Seattle Courthouse Wedding. On Thursday, December 22nd, I packed up my gear, crackers, sprite and (of course) a Starbucks skinny vanilla latte with almond milk and headed to meet my second shooter, Sarah of Sarah Gonia Photography.
Seattle, in December, is COLD and all that grey cement and steel really gives a beautiful dark vibe. Seeing Tonya and Mark walk up together, and her beautiful wedding dress vibrant against all that grey, nearly made my eyes leak. She was glowing (and shivering). Mark was a real team player as we made them pose and snuggle and kiss right there on the street. Poor guy. Haha!
Their ceremony was beautiful with the lights of Seattle visible in the background. Short and sweet, they were married before we knew it. And then it was off to the party!
Tonya and Mark,
Thank you for trusting me with these precious memories. I am truly blessed to be able to call you both valued clients and friends. I am looking forward to watching your family grow stronger in their bonds and family connection. May your years together be filled with lots of love, happiness and all that other good stuff. ;)
Much Love,
Markie
The first and farthest location I love is Clarks Creek Park. This place has miles of trails and plenty of room to send your kiddos off with a sitter for a bit while you relish in your love for one another. With plenty of trails to get lost in, Clarks Creek makes a gorgeous backdrop for your engagement photos.
Another favorite of mine, this park is set back off the beaten path. While it's set on the side of a hill, it's beautifully kept and has that fantastic Washington Moss growing everywhere!
Funny thing... I used to live right here, and never thought to use this great location for photos until recently. A short jaunt down the paved trail and you'll find a beautiful foresty background, plus the river and a few open fields. It's a great place to head for those who want woodsy locations without heading all the way into the National Park.
The best spot is actually right in our own backyard. Tehaleh is a beautiful housing community that's built for the outdoor types. They've kept some gorgeous trails through the community and of course... check out that view of Mt. Rainier? What more could a girl ask for?

Tammy with Delineations Photography asked me to come second shoot with her for this beautiful Chambers Bay wedding. The couple had a love story straight out of a fairy tale and their wedding matched that theme. Justine's father said she'd never even dated to his knowledge, but flew to Brazil for the world cup and came home in love with a Brazilian Dance Instructor, Luiz. Justine and Luiz recited their vows in front of at least 100 of their closest friends and family, spanning two continents. Luiz's friends and family came in from Brazil, while Justine's family gathered from the Western Washington Area. Justine and Luiz headed off after their beautiful day to continue their life together in Brazil.

]]>Sounds insanely miserable right? But it's the perfect season for warm apple cider, cozy layers and loads of snuggling with your hunny. It's also a wonderful time for an engagement session and here are three ideas to spark your engagement creativity.
1) Visit a pumpkin patch. Pumpkin patches are a huge part of the fall season and lucky for you, they boast more than just pumpkins! Most of them have corn mazes, other fun and awkward squash types, plus a bunch of food! Head down to Pumpkin Palace and grab a hot dog before heading over to chat with the turkeys. Spooner Farms tends to be super busy on the weekends, but it's a great time to go visit the dinosaurs in the corn maze and get a little lost in the meantime. Finally, for the brave of heart, there's Maris Farms. I haven't personally visited in the daylight, but after dark... it's one creepy experience. Grab your photographer (don't worry, she's brave) and head out to find the Great Pumpkin while celebrating your love.
2) Play in the trees at Point Defiance Park. Point Defiance Park is one of my go-to places, both professionally and personally. I can't tell you how many sessions I've shot here (It's been at least 4 this year alone) and how often I take my kids (or even just myself!) out here to relax. Over by the Pagoda is a beautiful garden area that's currently covered in reds, yellows & oranges. Head over to a bench to snuggle with your hunny for a minute during your engagement session.
3) Checkout the Carbon River Rain Forest Nature Trail. A quick and easy half mile round trip hike, makes the perfect mini adventure for your engagement session! Grab a beautiful dress and play princess for a bit.
Do you have a special idea for your own fall engagement session? Let's hear it!
]]>When Miss S booked a session with me, she knew she wanted to embrace the beauty that she is. This is a typical reason for clients booking boudoir with me. The ability to come in, have a good time and be comfortable in front of the camera without the awkward feeling of being half clothed with a complete stranger. The beauty and grace of each client always astounds me.
Sure, the hotel may have a buffet, but here are my two favorite breakfast hotspots for the morning after your wedding! (They're even FABULOUS to cure those blasted hangovers.) I highly suggest you check out, Beth's Cafe or Glo's Cafe, even if you don't get out of bed until 2:00 pm.
Beth's has been featured on the Travel Channel, Food Network and the Learning Channel, in addition to being voted "Best Place to Cure a Hangover". I have to agree. Beth's has become a favorite of mine when I'm in the Seattle area for pretty much any meal. Who doesn't love breakfast for dinner? I've even developed a standard order.... the Triple Bypass. Their 6 or 12 egg omlet choices are perfect for sharing (a tiny extra charge for the split is totally worth it), and still having leftovers.
Glo's is a tiny place, open 12:00 am to 4:00 pm and you'll want to arrive early to get a seat, but the coffee is complimentary while you wait. When I visited this cozy restaurant, I was seated at a shared table with a couple. The whole atmosphere feels very much like sitting in a dining room with your family. I'm guessing it's something about the small space. While their menu boasts some interesting options, including smoked salmon in both a scramble and a Benedict, they also have milder options for those of us who aren't as adventurous.
Feeling like you've eaten too much but don't want to head back to your hotel? Greenlake is right around the corner from Beth's or head down to Pike Place Market to walk off those calories and enjoy your first outing as newlyweds.

In August, I was given a rare chance to fly down and second shoot for Award Winning Photographer Mark Tioxon of LeahAndMark.com in San Luis Obispo, CA. The adventure started with an early morning plane flight into LAX, and a mini-road trip to SLO. Our road trip was scheduled to take 3 hours, but thanks to the lovely LA Traffic (gotta love that SoCal slow freeway) it ended up taking 5 to 6 hours. We learned my air guitar sucks during that trip.
Arrival at Flying Caballos Ranch literally took my breath away. The gorgeous ranch home is set back behind a warehouse area. You'd never know it was there unless you had the address. The historic house was built in 1905 and sits quietly in the rolling hills of Edna Wine Country. Seriously... If you have the chance to photograph here, or even just visit for a bit, do it. The place is magical when it's not even decorated.
Caroline + Paul were warm and welcoming. These two were incredible hosts and their laid back vibe melded with the beautiful California countryside. The entire event was a fairytale come to life.
Someday I'll make it back to Flying Caballos Ranch. But in the meantime, I'll set my sights on magical venues in the Pacific Northwest. Check out my post on Rattlesnake Ledge for another adventure story.
Find yourself a mentor. (No. Seriously. Go find one. It doesn't even have to be me.) Learning one on one is much easier than taking an online workshop or watching ten bajillion Creative Live sessions. Don't get me wrong here; I love online workshops (See the list of ones I've done here!) and Creative Live (in fact, I listen to Creative Live almost daily while I work). Both of these things helped me immensely in my photography.
But the one thing that really gave me a jump on my business, even if it was after doing everything wrong for almost 6 years, was finding a mentor. Mark Tioxon {LeahAndMark.com} got a crazy idea this year to offer an online internship. Having "stalked" him for almost a year, I could tell he was super skilled and definitely knew what he was doing. I applied, with some insanely massive application story that I really can't even remember now. Of course, I waited anxiously to find out if he was going to accept my application and allow me to learn from him.
I can't say exactly how much of a boost it was being able to learn from him, see what I was doing wrong (and what I was doing right), and get that extra bit of attention on my work. He taught me more than I had learned on my own in the past 6+ years of business. Sure, I'm still learning and have to re-read 90% of my notes on a weekly basis, but it's really helped me focus and find my way with my photography. It's a completely different learning experience than watching an online workshop.
So go, find yourself a mentor and pick their brains. Gleam all their knowledge, whether you do everything exactly like they do or not. Shoot with them. Study them. Then go out and make a name for yourself.

This chicken was very loved by her family. Loved enough they made her take photos with them at least. She enjoyed having her photo taken and her posing was definitely for the birds.
Ok. Ok. Enough terrible chicken puns.
I love getting to work with other small business owners. So when one of the owners of two Dickies BBQ locations stopped me at Sumner United Methodist Church to ask about having a family session with me, I was ecstatic! Megan's family was full of personality and the boys definitely kept me on my toes. I had to pull out ALL my lame jokes on these guys. ;)
The family chose to do their session on their farm out in Orting. It's a gorgeous location with a 100 year old red barn, that boasts years of initials carved into the wood! Annabelle came up with a wonderful setup including hay bales and pumpkins to celebrate the fall season. Of course, the animals had to join in the fun as well! Between the horse who posed so beautifully behind the tractor (I think she was jealous I wasn't over taking her picture), to the silkie chicken who so kindly tolerated us, I was right at home with this family.
The family was charismatic and we all had a lot of fun! Even if when I said "Be Serious, Don't Smile" they all took me seriously. Lol! They still ended up laughing in the end. I really enjoyed working with them and look forward to visiting and photographing their farm and family in the future!
One of my favorite October traditions is taking my girls to Scholz Farm in the Sumner-Orting Valley. The girls love being able to play, walk through the corn maze and see the animals up close. Picking out pumpkins to cook and carve almost falls to the way side when we're there. But each year, we head down during the week to grab some fun family time and a few pumpkins. The farm stand has some of the most delicious goodies as well if you're looking to pick up pickles, relish or a divine homemade BBQ sauce.
First an engagement session for Summer & Michael, and NOW?! A senior session for a gorgeous gal that I've known her whole life. Her aunt is one of my best friends from high school and her grandma used to lead our Girl Scout Troop with my mom.
Briana has grown up to become a beautiful girl. She enjoys participating in Track & Field (much more athletic than I am for sure), and drama club. She'll head off to college after her senior year to major in the medical field. I'm excited to see where she goes with her future. Best of luck Briana!

These were my copyright cards. Each USB or image order a client placed, got a copyright card. I was insanely anal about making sure EVERYONE knew about the copyrights. Of course, these goofy little cards had a CRUD-TON of words on them... in teeny tiny print. Seriously. I was in my 20s, not using a designer and just wanted everything to fit on the stupid little card. I'm also not sure where I got the bright idea that the stupid little card was the way to go for copyright info. But that's a whole different story.
Yikes. That's a lot of verbiage, especially when it comes to something as important as your wedding photos or family memories. The idea that your photos may be exploited is a really scary thought! But here's the thing, most photographers won't exploit you or your precious memories. They choose to retain the copyright so that your images aren't sold to third parties or otherwise used for some random person on the internet to use your images for advertising weird stuff. Plus NO ONE wants to drive by a billboard with their family photo on it, having never heard about the sale of that photo in the first place!
The truth is no, you really don't. What you need is a solid agreement with your photographer that they won't sell your images without you knowing about it. You'll also need a reproduction/print release, that states you are allowed to make copies, distribute and post your images. In my contract, my clients are provided with an irrevocable reproduction release, giving you the rights to print, reproduce and distribute your images as many times as you want. Want to send copies to Great Aunt Mable? Go for it. Want to post every single one of your 800 wedding images on Facebook? Sure thing! Use your purchased digital images to create mugs, photobooks, placemats, whatever your pretty little heart desires.
P.S. I love seeing what clients do with their images. ;) Post photos of your gallery walls, instagram pictures of your new photobook, tag me in a photo of your coffee mugs. I can't wait to see what you do!

I've had my eye on this hike for at least six months. I'd originally wanted to bring one of my couples up here, but so far no one has taken the bait. So finally, after wanting a hike and a random begging post on Facebook, one of my gal pals agreed to go with me if we went to Rattlesnake Ledge. Having had it on my list, I willingly agreed and we set a date and time for the hike.
I'm not typically an early riser, but I couldn't sleep the night before. Knowing I needed to be up and out of the house by 4:45 am to meet Jayne at 5:30 am, I tossed and turned for most of the night. But at 4:30 when my alarm went off, I jumped out of bed, tossed my gear (gently, my camera was in the bag) in my Subaru Outback and headed to our meeting place in Renton. A quick stop for a bite at McD's on my way and I was ready to go.
When we arrived at the park, it was still pitch black. Aside from camping trips as a kid, I'd never really been outside in the dark. It just wasn't something I made a habit of, because ya know, lions and tigers and bears, oh my! (Ok, really just the bears and maybe a cougar or two. No, I'm not talking WSU cougars either). Armed with bear spray (yeah.....) and a flashlight, we grabbed our backpacks and headed up the trail.
When we'd chosen this hike, it said it was 1.9 miles and the trail was steep. Well.... it was more than steep. It was STEEEEEEEEPPPPP. Imagine walking up about 20 flights of stairs without stopping. Yeah, that's what it was like. 1.9 miles felt like 500 miles. We stopped a few times for water breaks. Our hike was more like a meander. It was slow and right about the time we were ready to give up, I saw the sign at the top, warning about the steep cliffs. We'd reached our destination.
There are really no words to describe the majesty of this place. You're literally standing on a rock that hangs out over a thousand foot fall (the hike gain according to WTA is 1160ft). The trees below look like children's toys or something out of a Christmas Miniature Scene. The views from the top were simply incredible. It's one of those places where you end up standing in silence, taking it all in. Once we'd hit the top, I knew I needed to find a couple to adventure up there for a session. Because seriously, just look at these views:
As kids, my family used to spend summers camping.
Every summer, we'd pack up for a weekend or sometimes a week long camping trip. If it wasn't a family trip, it was girl scouts, boy scouts or adventure scouts. Some or all of my family was always gone during the summer. Being a single mom and a photographer, I don't always get to go on adventures with my kids. Juggling schedules can be a bit hectic. But over the weekend, my family decided we'd squeeze in one camping trip this summer. So Friday afternoon, I set out with three dogs, two kids and my Subaru to meet up with my parents in Chehalis.
The Thousand Trails Campground in Chehalis has always been a family favorite. I could fill this page with stories from my youth (My Lawd I feel old saying that) but I won't. Instead, I'll tell you this: We stayed in the RV for the most part, but took the dogs out for a few runs in the fields. It rained most of the time so we watched movies, snuggled and headed to the park between rain showers. It was probably the wettest camping trip I've been on since high school, but it was worth every cold soggy minute.
]]>And there are probably 150 million photographers who've covered this topic already. They'll talk about how your digital image might get lost on your computer, or that flash drive will die or some other emotional reason you might not want your images in only digital format. Each and every point is very valid. However, as a single mom who lives (and hopefully doesn't die) by a budget, there's a whole different factor to consider.
Let's look at this two ways: Once with all inclusive pricing and once with full service pricing. For purposes of this article, All inclusive photographers are those that will photograph you then give you a USB/CD/Gallery download link. You get to print your photos wherever you'd like and however many times you like, as well as upload to social media, websites or email them to friends. Full service photographers typically sit down with you to help you pick out prints, canvas and other products, and may or may not include digital images in their packages.
A base rate for all inclusive photographers in the South Puget Sound area, runs about $350* per hour. Many tend to give 20-30 fully edited images with their packages. Without including any tip for the photographer, you're paying about $14 per image based on 25 images. Not a bad price when you just want to post them on Facebook, run a slideshow on your computer's screen saver function or share them digitally (check your contracts though. Some photo releases prevent "sharing" digital files with friends and families).
Consumer labs, such as Costco, Walmart and Target, offer a variety of products that you can have your images printed on for a small price. One of my favorite online consumer labs is Shutterfly. You can actually get free 4x6 prints from time to time, and just pay shipping charges, adding a measly $8.97** to your digital purchase, bringing the total bill to $358.97! A steal if you ask me. But lets say you need several different sized prints. Your list might look a bit like this: 1 - wall print for your home, 2 - 8x10s for grandparents, 4 - 5x7 for great grandparents, and 32 wallets for your Christmas cards.
Using current (9/27/16) Shutterfly pricing:
1 - 11x14 small wall print - $7.99
2 - 8x10 gift prints - $7.98
4 - 5x7 gift prints - $3.96
8 - Set of 4 wallets (32 total) - $14.32
Grand Total w/shipping**: $47.28
That's for your one image. One digital image has now cost about $61.28, and that's not yet including additional prints you might want to put up, other products or books. Not to mention, you're stuck doing the 20-30 minutes it takes putting together your order, making sure everything is cropped perfectly, etc. ;)
You could lower the per image price by purchasing mugs with multiple images on them (Shutterfly has some cool ones starting at $16.99), Collage frames (Shutterfly prices start at $59.99) or Collage Posters (Shutterfly prices start at $2.79). Honestly, the all inclusive price is great for the budget, but you do run a few risks too, including poor quality printing and possible fading over time. Those things do make a difference, depending on how long you want your photos on display and what you do with them after you've taken them down.
Full service prices can be SCARY. Believe me, I totally get it. As a single mother who works her tail off at two jobs, I am right there with you cowering in the corner when someone says "Print prices start at $12 for a 4x6 image". Yikes, right? Especially when you've already paid $99 for a session fee and didn't get anything other than a good time to show for it. Let's say your $99 session fee results in 15 images, that's $6.60 per image. Now, if you're anything like me, you'll have some crazy gallery wall started and you'll want to add to that. Maybe you want four 5x7s, two 8x10s and one 11x14.
By the time you're done, those add up to $150 (not including tax!). Wow. But here's the fun part: Even if you don't purchase any of the other images, your per image price is $35.57-ish. And those prints don't even need frames for display. They come mounted on matboard and can easily be displayed on a shelf or hung on the wall with command hangers.
If simple prints aren't your style and you're wanting more bang for your buck, you can get a full gallery USB + 8x8 Photobook for $800. The photobook alone is worth $225. By the time you're done, those digital images are $26.96 each. And you have a gorgeous book to keep for yourself or gift to the grandparents at Christmas.
The best part? Those memories aren't just stuffed away on your computers hard drive, or on a USB in a drawer somewhere. They are up there, on your walls where you get to see them daily and be reminded of the wonderful time you had with those you love dearly.

It feels a bit shocking actually. I swear just a few moments ago we were welcoming the gorgeous Seattle Summer. Now suddenly it's a beautiful Washington Fall Season, with Seattle Rain, snuggly hoodies and Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Before we stuff all our summer goodies away though, here are a few of my September Favorites.
Jordin + Tom welcomed me into their home for some quick portraits. This fun couple shares a lot of the geeky qualities I love in my clients, from a creative music skill to the die hard Princess Bride fan. I'm quite in love with these two as you can tell.
I know a lot of you might be scrambling right now, wondering and worrying if your photographer is going to screw you over like this one did to her brides. I can assure you, we're not all like that. We don't all offer you amazing prices and then completely ignore you, only to blow you off at the last minute. AND we don't all blame you like this article here. (P.S. I DON'T agree with that photographer at all. It makes me sad she would do that.)
So here's what I want you to know. There are photographers out there that will work with your budget. Sometimes it can be daunting when a photographer lists starting prices that are THOUSANDS of dollars over your budget. There are a few things I would recommend you do:
1) ALWAYS ask to meet with your photographer before booking. The only time I'd ever say "go ahead and book" someone you've never met in person, is when that photographer has been personally vetted by someone you truly trust and HAVE met in person (think a brother/sister/parent or your absolute-never-gonna-let-you-down best friend).
2) Even if your photographer has been personally vetted by the Pope himself, scour their website and social media like a crazy-stalker-ex-lover. You want to know everything before you hire them. Including if they eat tacos daily for lunch.
3) Ask to see a full wedding. If they can't/won't show you one (even if it's the ONLY one they have) there are usually two reasons for this: Maybe they've never shot a wedding and that's perfectly ok! If you're comfortable with them and trust their judgement, feel free to hire them anyway. This is great for someone with a very small budget. The other, more scary reason, is they may not be completely truthful. I would be wary of any wedding photographer who can't/won't show you a full wedding. You can view almost all of my full weddings here, including my first wedding with super old branding on it.
4) If you fall in love with a photographer who is a bit out of your price range, ask about a payment plan or financing. It's a lot easier to pay large amounts in smaller chunks. Payment plans allow you to do that paying cash, while financing usually requires you to use your credit. A lot of photographers offer this even if they don't actually advertise.
5) Consider your timeline. You might not need a full day package, but if you're concerned about needing extra time, ask potential photographers what their policies are on overtime. You might be surprised with the options out there.
6) Last but not least, please realize there is a whole network of wedding photographers out there. We TALK. We SUPPORT each other. Which means, if your photographer has an emergency, they should have backups. Ask them who they work with on the regular and who they call when they have an emergency. We never wish that something happens to prevent us from making it to your wedding day. But we do PLAN for the worst case scenario.
Please, if you ever find yourself in a situation where you're needing a last minute photographer, reach out. Maybe I can help get you covered. <3
]]>I can't believe all the fun sessions I got to photograph last month! Three boudie sessions, an AMAZEBALLS wedding with Mark from LeahandMark.com (of course, I'm still holding those images until he says I can show you! Sigh. Such is the life of a second!), two awesome couples sessions, an engagement I'd been dying while waiting for (just kidding!) AND a last minute family session, complete with a sweet pup! Boy was that an awesome month! Here are my favorites from those sessions!
I can't wait to see what this month brings! Here's to September!
]]>I love getting to talk shop while they prep for a session with me. When Sarah offered up herself and her hubby for a couples session, I was stoked to get some time to chat with her.
These two are adorable. We used the beloved technique for their session as well and it got some adorable images a second time! I’m really enjoying getting to play with this new model. Sarah & Kyle, I look forward to getting to know the two of you more!
Back in July, I started searching for the perfect floral designer to put together a bouquet and boutonniere combo for one of my past brides who wished to have a "re-do" on her wedding photos. I found Cindy Garske of Flower Fayes on a Facebook group and fell in love with her work. I explained my vision to her and she made it a more beautiful reality than I could have imagined.
Flower Fayes, which has been in business for 31 years, was not only amazing to work with, but also sweet enough to answer some questions for me to feature them on the blog!
"My mom had a love for flowers and introduced me to gardening. When I was of age to work, I started in a small flower shop as a cashier. I had a huge interest in floral design. Eventually I was taking every opportunity there was to create and learn the business. I earned a masters in floral design and competed in shows. Floral design is an expression of every human emotion there is through flowers."
"I pride myself on customer service and satisfaction. I meet on location if needed. I like to meet up with brides a couple times before the wedding, just to confirm they're satisfied with their choice of flowers."
"I love offering seasonal flowers and the brides bouquet is my favorite product! I love seeing her face light up when I deliver it to her! <3"
Cindy of Flower Fayes, would love to live in Maui if she had the choice to live anywhere. If she could tell you, the potential bride anything? "Trust me, it will be beautiful!" And let me tell you, she's telling the absolute truth! When you're in the market for the perfect bridal bouquet, email Cindy Garske at [email protected] and let her design that perfect piece for you!
Watching these two in love was absolutely thrilling. Even without knowing their story, you can tell they've been through a lot together. Getting married on their 2nd anniversary was the perfect start to their new lives as husband and wife. Jayme & Allen, I wish you all the best! Congratulations on your marriage. Cherish and adore one another for the rest of your lives, just like you already do today. Much love, Markie.

]]>But after photographing Miss T last summer, I got asked to do multiple other women's boudoir photos. So I gave in and started photographing boudoir. When Click Shutter Amazing decided to host an in studio boudoir shootout, I knew I wanted in. I tossed my name in and a short time later I was on my way to Portland, OR.
Before this, my sessions were typically in home or outdoors, both options I still love for clients. But shooting in a natural light studio brought a whole new aspect to it. Then when we got the idea to move out to the rooftop.... I completely fell in love with everything boudoir. Now I can't get enough and can't wait to get some more sessions in.
]]>Something about the holidays always gets to me. Maybe it's the snow, the decorations or just the general aura of the season, but it's always a season of pure enchantment. Here are six ways to make your winter wedding sparkle:
1) Glittery tree branches. This bundle was found at Kristy's Country Store in downtown Sumner, which is an amazing little shop to find goodies in. Be sure to check out vintage shops in your area for beautiful glittery branches like these. You could also make your own using a tutorial like this one by Momtastic (<-- click for link).
2) Vintage Ornaments can add a beautiful magical vibe to your wedding. Toss them in bowls with some tinsel, hang them from tiny tree centerpieces, or gift them to your guests as a special keepsake.
3) Twinkle lights. Any color of twinkle lights. Wrap them around a dollar store wreath form that you've painted with sliver paint, or between false trees to create an archway.
It was her senior year of high school, and I had yet to start my business. Her dad insisted on paying me, which I turned down saying I didn't have the proper experience. He paid me anyway, in the form of an Applebee's gift card, which I used to take my small family on a dinner date (Thank you Brad). He believed in me and my work even back then.
Since that very first session, Summer has returned to me at least once a year for photos. She's helped me out when I needed to test new equipment, drags Michael along with her when I needed a man to add to my portfolio and brings her best friend, Ashley, out for photos of the two of them that don't include random street side selfies. She'd mentioned in passing during a random outing, that she would love for me to photograph her wedding in the future, whenever that ended up coming to pass. Of course, I was more than happy to oblige her.
So when I saw her announce she and Michael had gotten engaged, I was thrilled for them! I also knew it meant I needed to really do something different this time. So late the other night, I selected images, clipped and spliced video and came up with a love story slideshow.
What I really can't wait for though, is their wedding. These two are such a blast to photograph, laughing and talking and making the most of our short time together. She's going to be stunning in whatever she chooses to wear and I'm thrilled to be joining them as their photographer as they take vows and join together as husband and wife.

After learning my hard drive with all my engagement sessions on it went missing (it's around here SOMEWHERE, but having moved almost yearly for 5 years, I have no idea where in my storage unit it is), I put a call out in one of my favorite Facebook groups asking for willing models. Leslie messaged me, saying if I was ok with old people, they'd be more than willing to model. (Silly 25 year old woman!) Having met Leslie before and connected with her as a friend, I was super excited to take her up on the "old people" photographs. ;)
I knew these two were perfect to try out the prompts I'd purchased from the Beloved Collective. Leslie mentioned she was "awkward" in front of the camera (aren't all photographers?) and Shannon was very clear that he only came because he felt bad I'd lost my photos. But by the time we were done, those two were all smiles and you'd never know they weren't naturals in front of the camera.
Seeing these two together and watching them laugh, joke, and shed a tear or two (TOTALLY my fault. I take all the blame there.) really warmed my heart. They successfully blended their families and built a love like none other.
Shannon + Leslie,
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for coming out and joining me last week. Your love gives me hope for my own. Stay snuggly you two, and make out a lot. ;)
xoxo,
Markie
Isn't really how every love story starts. I still remember hearing about Chris's efforts to get my cousin Ashley to go out with him just once. She was pretty reluctant to give him that first date. But once she did, it would be impossible to separate those two. They were married in January 2013, with their little one Kingsten expected shortly after that. I photographed their wedding that year, approximately 30 people crammed into my uncle's living room in Tacoma.
The styled session didn't go as planned. We had this on our schedule since Mid-April, and had been discussing doing new "wedding" pictures for the two of them a while before that. Yesterday we learned our original location wasn't available today, so we improvised and went to one of the families favorite places, Point Defiance Park.
The location turned out perfect. Even though the boys only gave us about half an hour for shooting, we had a blast. Ashley looked gorgeous in a white gown (from my client closet) and Chris's idea to add in the blue & silver heels tied her outfit to his nicely.

Always feels like a super challenge. But the best part is that it’s a ton of fun! When Tiffany, owner of Sashem Photography, first asked in one of our photography groups if anyone was willing to do a trade, I was surprised that my name popped up from a couple other photographers. Seeing that she had a large family (6 kids!) I got super excited to photograph them!
Seriously, getting to photograph Tiffany + Alan’s family was pure joy for me. These kids are amazing together and the love their family has for one another is truly obvious. Running and playing with Rex, searching for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and being a big group of goofballs was more fun than I could have imagined. I am very grateful that I was given the opportunity to connect with them and photograph their love.

Meeting Alainna for the first time…
was an “Oh, there you are. I was looking for you.” experience for me. Having signed my daughter Emillia up for gymnastics in Auburn, I walked in not knowing anyone. A group of mothers side eyed me, but Alainna and her little boy Sean welcomed my daughter Grace and I without any second thought.
I was thrilled when she asked me to photograph her family this summer. Being military, we never know when someone will be shipped out or have to move until last minute. Thankfully, neither happened between the time she booked and the time we were able to shoot!
The love in this family is exceptional. Tom has a way of making his wife grin from ear to ear effortlessly. It’s very obvious how deeply in love they are. And those two darling kids are full of energy and antics. Even when Sean didn’t want to sit still.
Tom + Alainna, best wishes on all your adventures together. May they be many and the odds be ever in your favor. <3

I met Miranda and Matt a year or so ago when they selected Sumner United Methodist Church as their new family church. I was super stoked to hear when they announced sweet little Caden would be joining them. It took us a few tries to get their session finished, between sick kiddos and schedules, but we finally met up at Victor Falls for a quick family session.
Caden wasn’t having it. It’s not every day you run into someone who’s hair color changes every time you see them (considering I typically saw him at church and the last time he’d seen me, my hair was pink…. this time it was purple. I really can’t blame him.) But towards the end he started to warm up to the idea of having this crazy woman take his picture.
Miranda + Matt, Thank you for allowing me to photograph your family! I look forward to watching little Caden grow up! <3 Not too fast though. Slow that boy down.
When you want your photography to capture every aspect of your day, starting at 9 am when you first sit down with your MUA, you may find that by the time you've eaten, tossed your bouquet and danced your heart out, that clock is already striking midnight! And a lot of times, photography budgets don't allow for those extra hours without added fees and cranky photographers. (Photographers get hangry too!)
If your budget doesn't allow for your photographer to stay until 10:00 pm when you plan to leave, talk to your photographer about "staging" your exit. "Staging" an exit is the process of setting everything up before you plan to even leave. This "fake" exit can be very beneficial to you (the bride and groom) and capture a moment that might not otherwise happen. Here are six benefits to staging your exit:
As the night carries on, the sun goes down fast. If you're planning to have a night time sparkler exit, this isn't a worry, but for those gorgeously lit rainbow bubble exits, too little light can make things a bit difficult. Your photographer should be able to read the light and pick the perfect moment to start your walk down the bubbly aisle surrounded by your guests.
As the night wears on, guests will begin to leave. The later your bubble exit, the fewer guests may be left in attendance. Unfortunately, for exits where lots of "hot air" is required to make bubbles, you need people. More people = More bubbly potential.
And ultimate re-do power if someone gets out of line. "Uncle John, step back in line please. Sue and James, back to the start!" Just kidding. But in the instance something goes completely out of whack, you can start again.
You won't be concerned that you're running out of time if you stage your bubble exit well within your allotted photography time. You'll avoid the risk of added fees (unless you book a photographer like me, who only offers start to finish coverage) or having your photographer walk out in the middle of your exit (which should NEVER EVER EVER HAPPEN!). Plus you can go back in and enjoy the party, knowing your photographer got all of the special moments to tell your story with.
Photographers, like everyone else, love a good party. While alcohol is NOT necessary for a good party, it does make an appearance at the majority of weddings. And alcohol always tends to bring along it's sister-wife, the Drunkortunity. We're not fond of the Drunkortunity around here, as she tends to create some major drama. Staging your exit early, before alcohol has grabbed a hold of your partygoers, keeps the Drunkortunities at bay. Which means everyone remains wearing pants and there are no lampshades on anyone's heads during your exit images.
Wedding dresses are HEAVY and dancing your heart out can make even a fit bride start to feel gross and sweaty. Staging your exit showcases your wedding dress before you're tempted to ditch it and wear something lighter. On the other hand, it also gives you a chance to don a party dress and dance the night away without the extra 30 lbs of tulle.

]]>The sixpence is a penny, in case you weren't aware. Placed in the bride's shoe, it's said that the sixpence will bring her a life filled with good fortune. The whole rhyme goes:
While I'm not even sure that you can find silver pennies anymore, this rhyme dates back to the Victorian era. There are a lot of variations on this tradition, and it seems that no two brides ever honor it just the same way. Anna, a June 2014 bride, had her grandmother's broach incorporated in her wedding bouquet for her something old. Many of my brides have considered their dresses to be their something new. Jewelry is a popular item to "borrow", even I borrowed a ring for my own wedding many moons ago. Tara, a July 2015 bride, honored her late father with her something blue; a heart cut out of his favorite blue shirt. But never have I ever seen someone put a silver sixpence in their shoe.
From blue stones in your rings, to blue shoes.... borrowed dresses to borrowed gems.... There is really nothing stopping you from using this tradition to add just a touch of spunk to your big day. It's pretty much the most fun tradition ever, and it helps make your day, all yours.
It's highly unlikely that anyone is going to cast your wedding photographer in a Pizza Hut commercial or as the panty-dropper, bad boy, James Dean. But even dreamy James Franco doesn't hold a candle to a wedding photographer on your big day. Here are 5 reasons wedding photographers are cooler than James Franco:
Lugging that camera equipment all over the place leads to super muscles.... And a desperate need to tighten the bolts on household appliances to prevent unnecessary breaking of said appliances. This article may be humorous but the 40 lbs of camera gear weighing down the back of my Subaru Outback is all serious business.
Reason 2: Enhanced awareness
They pay close attention to details around them, capturing split second moments and candid memories. You won't catch them dodging bullets, but you might see them sneaking around behind a bride and groom as they chat with their new family during the reception. This enhanced awareness is also good for zombie hunting and survival skills.
Reason 3: Unscripted humor
Do you have an uncle who can't keep his dirty jokes to himself? Don't worry, wedding photographers can diffuse awkward situations by making them more awkward with their own twisted sense of humor. Who's in the market for left and right socks? No one? Also, why I wrote this ridiculous article.
Reason 4: The steamy kissing scenes
Ok, so a lot of us would love to kiss James Franco, probably more so than you'd want to kiss your photographer. But wedding photographers can set up those steamy moments between you and your partner. And while your wedding photographer is cooler than James, I'm willing to bet you think your partner is much hotter.
Reason 5: No need for a stunt double
Falling off a step ladder? Check. Tripping over a divot in the dirt? Check Check. Spraining an ankle and still completing the wedding? Triple check. There's no need to get your wedding photographer a stunt double; we do our own stunts. Just.... maybe keep some fireball and ice packs on hand. You think I'm joking? A wedding party cheered for me once.... because I tripped but didn't fall on my face. That's talent right there.
All that aside, even this wedding photographer still loves James Franco. He just can't handle this wedding photographer awesomeness though.

New Beginnings Bridal Studio is here to help you find that absolutely perfect gown for your big day.
Tina & Daron pay close attention to detail when choosing the gowns they supply and are excited to assist you on your journey to the alter.
The lovely ladies at New Beginnings Bridal Studio were kind enough to take time out of their day to answer questions so that I could feature them today on the blog! The gorgeous gowns they provided for the Windmill Gardens Styled Shoot back in April are showcased today as well!
"Everyone is attracted to wedding gowns! Tina has long dreamed of owning a bridal store, and Daron loved helping girls make their wedding vision a reality when she worked as a bridal consultant. So when Daron came across the opportunity to actually purchase a store, neither hesitated to jump at it!"
"We like to think of our brides as more than a sale... we like to be their friends! We love our time spent getting to know them with their family and friends during their appointment, and because we have private suites, it's a perfect setting for building relationships! We consider it an honor to be a part of the family during this exciting process!"
"We take pride in the designers we offer our brides. There is careful consideration and thought put into each and every line and style in our showroom."
"Be open-minded when you come to try on gowns. If you're open, you are often surprised and fall in love with a look and style you never dreamed would be for you!"
"Let's face it, the PNW is pretty awesome with it's mild temps and gorgeous sunny days, but the times it perpetually rains, Tina wouldn't mind escaping to a sunny lakeside and Daron loves the coolness of the mountains."
"My wedding is 3 months away and I was starting to stress that I wouldn't find a dress, and every place I went was super stressful and busy but then I found New beginnings bridal and it was the best experince I ever had! It was quiet, calm, organized, and everything is super beautiful and very well put together. The person who helped me, Daron Snyder, and she was so helpful and so much fun! The best bridal studio I went to, I highly recommend this store! I found my dress is less then hour that's how easy it was."

This superstition dates way back to the years when arranged marriages were common. During those times, the couple wasn't allowed to see each other before the wedding AT ALL! Generally, marriages were treated as a business deal and daughters were married off to wealthy families, allowing the bride's family to "move up". Plus father's feared that the grooms would call off the wedding if their daughters were not attractive to the man they were supposed to be marrying (because that's super father like and not at all body shaming - am I right?!), so they made it impossible for the wedding to be called off ahead of time. They believed that by the time the bride was walking down the aisle, it was too late to call of the transaction (OBVIOUSLY they hadn't seen the Runaway Bride).
Now, with arranged marriages highly uncommon, some brides choose to stick with the tradition of not seeing their partner before the wedding ceremony. THAT IS TOTALLY FINE! However, the first look is becoming more and more common. While a lot of reasons for having a first look come into play during the decision making time (portrait time frames, reception schedules, time allowed at the ceremony site) there's one MAJOR reason for having a first look:
Imagine. You're standing in front of a crowd of 100 people. Your favorite people, and maybe some of your least favorite people (Great Aunt Jane who always gives $5 bills in your birthday card even though you're 25 and that doesn't even buy a coffee.... but I digress) are all watching you. ALL EYES ARE ON YOU! Then your partner comes walking down the aisle, looking fantastically stunning and all you can think is "I'm not going to cry". So you stand there, with your resting bitch face on, looking ready to murder someone.... NOT like you're about to marry the love of your life.
Your partner doesn't want to remember you staring at them stone faced as they walked towards your new life together. They want to remember the smile on your face, the pure exhilarating joy, and the shine of the love you have for them. All those things you only show them, and you can't possibly let the rest of the world see while you're standing at the alter.
Imagine, you're standing outside, listening to the birds maybe talking to the wind or yourself. It's peaceful. You can almost feel your partner's presence as they walk towards you from behind. Your nerves ramp up, and the excitement of seeing your forever love grows with each passing second. Suddenly you feel a tap on your shoulder, so quickly you almost jump. Turning you first catch a glimpse of a flower bouquet, then a white dress, then finally the love of your life. They're completely stunning. You don't even notice the photographer on your left, shooting over your shoulder... or the birds in the trees anymore. In that moment, it's just you and your bride. You kiss and dance and twirl, enjoying a moment that just the two of you share.
If you're looking for a unique wedding venue, don't skip over the obvious.
Driving down Ruston Way in Tacoma you'll find this hidden gem off to the side near the water. Gazing out over the water and sitting quietly by itself. At first glance it seems to be just another pavilion but coming in closer, it's a wonderful spot for a small wedding.
The Fuzhou Ting is a 30x40 ft ornate pavilion, donated from Fuzhou, China, one of Tacoma's Sister Cities. It's evidence of support for Tacoma's Chinese reconciliation efforts and is managed by Metro Parks for weddings and outdoor private events.
Positioning your partner in the center of the pavilion, your guests can rally around the love of your life as you approach from the bridge along the water. For more impact, consider having your first look here before the ceremony, with your partner blindfolded under the pavilion as you approach.
This unique space fits 25 people under the pavilion and approximately 75 around the pavilion perimeter. It's low rental fee and two hour time blocks make it perfect for a quick ceremony before jetting off to a fabulous reception.
Believe me, they are. As someone who had a wedding photographer come in and send me all the digitals from my wedding (over 4000 images) that hadn't even been culled.... I saw the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. It took me HOURS to get through all of those photos. So much time that I actually quit and never looked at them again. I probably have photos in there that I've never even seen because it was just too much work to get to an end product. I don't want that for you and your wedding. Hiring a wedding photographer may seem like a daunting task, but I assure you, it's totally worth it in the end.
1) They spend hours gleaning knowledge and know how from other photographers, workshops and classes. I've personally taken thousands of hours of education on photography in general, and hundreds of that being geared towards wedding photography. I've taken courses taught by Scott Robert Lim, Sal Cincotta, and The Blissful Maven as well as hundreds of other photographers over the past 10 years, and I'm currently studying under Mark Tioxon as an Intern. I'm constantly on the hunt for new knowledge and skills to make your wedding photography dreams come true.

Having met Angel & Shanti through friends, I was able to spend time really getting to know them before their wedding. I have to say, they are one of the most adorable couples I've ever met. The love they have for each other really shines when you see the two of them together.
Saturday morning started out early and the storms loomed over the venue creating some pretty amazing clouds. Unfortunately due to the storms, the wedding planner and venue coordinator worked with the bride to move the ceremony inside the tent. We spent most of the morning in the bridal suite while the gals got ready and had a good time enjoying each other's company.
The ceremony started at 1:45, only a few minutes behind schedule. Watching Shanti as he saw Angel for the first time brought tears to my eyes. The ceremony was beautiful and getting to witness Shanti marry his Viking Princess Angel was one of those moments most people long for. The celebration continued with dancing, yard games and even some sunshine that came out to join us.
Angel & Shanti, May your days together be many and your nights apart be short. Wishing you the very best in your journey together. Much Love, Markie

Even at 8 am, the room was on full hustle. Stephanie was finishing the curls in Shantell's hair when I arrived. Within a few minutes, the MUA arrived and started on Shantell's makeup while Stephanie curled Jessica's hair. Soon Hope, Joann and Stephanie's two girls arrived and everyone started getting their dresses on. Once they were all ready and sewn into their dresses, Stephanie stepped into her beautiful David's Bridal dress, the girls helped slip on her shoes and then we were all out the door.
Everything was running late (which is completely normal for a wedding) so when I arrived all the guests were seated and just waiting on Stephanie. I grabbed a couple images of the Marina Hills Recreational Center before Sue found me to say that Stephanie and the girls had arrived.
The ceremony was beautiful with vows and the uniting of two families. Followed by the reception, and quite the dance party. Brent's two boys were the kings of the dance floor, generally surrounded by their adoring fans. There were a lot of beautiful happy emotions that day and the wedding was a wonderful way for Brent and Stephanie to join their families and begin their new life together.
Brent + Stephanie, I wish you the very best in your marriage. May you always be a team and remember to enjoy the little moments. Thank you for allowing me to photograph your special day. Much love & respect, Markie.
Not every location is suitable for the look or style that you're wishing for. If you're wanting a secluded, whimsical, woodland romance style, shooting in downtown Pioneer Square is definitely not going to work. Same goes for wanting an ultra modern punk rock session... Shooting that in front of a waterfall an obvious no-go. Or you could show up in a gorgeous ball gown and be shooting in front of trash bins. Not a typical vision, but hey, to each their own. As for me, I tend to have a few ideas up my sleeve.
One of the locations I tend to shoot a lot is downtown Tacoma area. Some of my favorite shots are from back alleys near Broadway, like these from my 2015 Senior Sessions. The alleys give some diverse backgrounds including graffiti, bright yellow walls and a ton of old brick.
The Glass Museum & Surrounding AreaAnother Urban favorite is the glass museum and it's surrounding areas. Depending on where you head, you can give the illusion of being out in the woods... while staying within walking distance of a Starbucks. These images from Rachel's Senior session were shot at the Museum and nearby park along the Foss Waterway.
One of my favorite "Urban" locations without really being urban. Ruston way waterfront features several docks, gorgeous views of the sound and the Fuzhou Ting Pavillion in Tacoma's Chinese Reconciliation Park. I love shooting engagements during the sunset hours along Ruston Way, and even shot a wedding at the Fuzhou Ting Pavillion in 2013!
A few urban areas I've yet to shoot that I would love to plan sessions for include: Pike Place Market, Seattle's Waterfront, Pioneer Square and Kent Station. If you're interested in one of these locations, send me a message at [email protected]! I'd love to speak with you!
]]>One minute it can be sweltering and the next it could be pouring down rain, even in the middle of December. Here in Western Washington, you simply never know, so planning what to wear for your family session can be a bit of a headache. These are a few basic guidelines to help you out!
Depending on the location of your session, I highly suggest having one family member wear a single patterned piece; be it a shirt, dress or tank top. Using the colors in this pattern, select the rest of the family member's outfits within the same color palette. This creates a cohesive look for the family without being too wild or busy. In the image below, Jackie and her kids are all dressed in a blue/white/jean combo, using the palette from her son's patterned shirt. The bright blue made an awesome contrast against the greenery out at Flaming Geyser State Park.
Jessica's spring family session didn't have a pattern at all, but rather a common color that tied everyone's outfits together. 3-4 shades of turquoise blend together nicely with white accents. The blues all popped against the floral backgrounds at Windmill Gardens in Sumner, WA.
Another version of this idea is to have everyone wear similar colors. Here the boys are in blue and the mom is in purple. Since the base of the color purple is blue, this works as well.
Sometimes, coordination can be difficult and you simply need to abandon all the rules. For this large family photo, they simply stuck with a common color scheme of red and white. There are a few patterns, but since everything is color coordinated, it works.
The best way to decide on your session outfits is to have a consultation with your photographer so that you can decide what style is best for your chosen location.
They're filled with joyous occasions, like announcing to your family and friends that you've found the love of your life, and the beginning stages of wedding planning. You'll pick flowers, dresses, tuxedos and jewelry. Your days ahead will be chock full of decision making and which colors for the napkins at the place settings. You'll spend every last minute stuffing in the tiny details of your special day. Planning your engagement session should be given that same attention to detail and be a unique reflection of you.
There are dozens of tiny details that go into planning your engagement session, from time frame to your clothing choices and everything in between. Throughout your time with me, I'll help lead you through the planning process, giving you suggestions and ideas for every last piece. Think of me as your personal engagement planner.
Choosing your photographer can be quite a process. Your time is highly valuable, so a quick phone consultation will give you a great idea of how I work. I'll schedule a call during a time that works best for you. At most, it will take 20-30 minutes. I'll answer your questions, give you a rundown of how the session works and get any additional information from you. Once we're finished, you'll receive an email with a link to sign up my client portal, pay your retainer and sign your contract.
Once your contract is signed and retainer is paid, the fun begins! You'll receive an email that gives you the option to schedule an additional consultation with me and a questionnaire asking for details on what you'd like for your session. If you chose the additional consultation, we'll meet at Starbucks (or your favorite spot for eats) and discuss all the details you'd like included in the feel of your session. Once we're finished, I'll head home and start nailing down details to make your engagement session feel like a dream.
Your Style: After your date and time has been secured, one of the first things we'll decide on is your style. Do you want to do a 1950s Rockabilly style session with a bright red dress and blue heels? Or is your dream to hike out to a secluded area in Mt Rainier National Park and stand at the base of a waterfall in a slinky black dress with the love of your life? These options are both very possible and only a few of the ideas I want to see come to life in the future.
The Location: Once your style has been decided, I'll research different locations for your session. I have a list of possible destinations depending on the length of your session, including but not limited to: Franklin Falls, HOH Rainforest, Dairy Freeze, Persnickety's, and Old Miners Trail. I'll send you two or three options to choose from, or I can decide for you if you'd rather not have to make a decision.
Your Outfit: Sometimes, the clothing in your closet is just not enough. I'll help you choose an outfit from your closet, or you can choose one from my growing client closet. Depending on the theme or style of your session, it's possible I'll find something specific just for your session. My client closet is small at the moment but currently includes a giant red tutu, several different dresses, and a bunch of sparkly jewelry.
Hair & Makeup: Depending on what style your going for, I can schedule you for hair and makeup before your session if you'd like. Additional charges may apply.
During this time, you'll receive an email from Pinterest inviting you to collaborate on a board along with me. You can choose to join in on the planning process, pinning styles you love and want to include, or you can just scan through and check on what I'm planning for you. The choice is completely up to you.
A few weeks before your engagement session, you'll receive an email from me confirming your details. I'll follow this up with a phone call to schedule a meeting via Skype or Facetime, so that we can smooth out any details. We'll double check the weather (though rain is never a reason for me to reschedule unless it's necessary for your session), time frame and make sure there aren't any additional permits that are needed.
The final stage of the planning is the execution of your session. We'll meet up shortly ahead of time (depending on the location and the plan) and head out to where we'll be shooting. Depending on where we're headed, we may stop along the way to grab a few photos. I'll give you some prompts and small directions as we go then let you and your honey do your thing to ensure we get the most natural photos possible.
Sure, you can sit down with a photographer and hear them talk about how they work, but you don't actually know if you'll work well together until you are photographed by them. What happens if your photographer is gruff and barking orders at your kids in the middle of your big day?? While we hope that would never be the case... it happens. Let's face it, photographers aren't perfect and we lose our cool too.
Do they sit down with you for a consultation to plan your session or are you simply given instructions to meet at a park on a random Tuesday and "look pretty"? How do they interact with you? Small directions on what to do or are you given rigid posing instructions? Are you able to make suggestions as you go or do they confidently orchestrate the entire thing? Do you leave feeling more in love and like you've met your best friend; Or do you leave feeling like just another number? Depending on what you are looking for in a photographer, these things can make or break a workable relationship.
If your photographer provides prints and a USB with their engagements (like I do) you'll get a chance to feel the paper prints, beautiful wooden USBs, and possibly other products that feature images from your session. No more looking through images of other people, you get to see how their images of YOU come out in their products. This is the ultimate way to discover how much you love your photographer. It's easy to scan through website after website of beautiful images, but if you're handed a product with your image on it and it doesn't feel right in your hands, that's probably not the photographer for you. This isn't something you want to learn AFTER your wedding day images are delivered. This is something to be decided well before that final payment is made.
If you've found a photographer you love, and have time for an engagement session (or two) do it. If you can't decide between photographers but have the time and means to get more than one engagement session, there is NOTHING saying you can't (except maybe someone's exclusive photographer clause, so read those contracts carefully). If your chosen photographer includes an engagement session with their wedding package, I would suggest making sure you're comfortable with that photographer before booking. Simply because it's unfair to both of you to waste everyone's time if you decide down the line to not complete your contract (plus breaking contracts is a pain in the rear and will cost you your retainer in most cases).
As a wedding photographer, my job is to capture all those seemingly little moments that happen throughout the day. Aunt Susie helping the ring bearer tie his shoe, the mother of the bride lacing the back of the wedding dress, or Grandpa Jack buttoning the special cuff links the bride bought for her husband to be. These little details are things that can easily be missed in the big picture. In order to avoid missing something important, I've created the following rules for myself so that I can remain 100% confident and calm during your special day.
Through questionnaires, emails and consultations, I'm able to get a feel for exactly how you'd like your special day to be portrayed. Sometimes the day can be incredibly chaotic and I don't want you to be worried that your father in law's heirloom tie clip isn't photographed. When preparing my shot list, I'll scour the pinterest board we've prepared, the special shots you've mentioned or listed, and any creative shot I've seen that makes me think of you.
This doesn't mean I'm going to walk away from you or your groom during an important moment, but rather, I'll spend time in the bridal quarters with you setting up my needed shots, then wandering the room to see if there's a unique spot for additional shots. When time allows, I'll move into other parts of the venue with small details (flowers, shoes, jewelry, etc) and photograph those things away from the hustle and bustle.
Every wedding has a ton of individual details that make it exclusively yours. Tiny details from the delicate beading on a wedding dress, to the charm specifically chosen for the flower girl to wear, I make a note to photograph each individual detail as I go. Sometimes if an item is truly one of a kind, I'll get a little carried away. This doesn't mean you'll have 25 shots of your wedding ring in your entire gallery, but rather 2-3 beautifully styled shots to cherish.

Be sure to remember other factors that may or may not impede your time when creating your wedding day timeline: Traffic, travel between venues, additional portraits that you must have, etc. The best way to create a wedding day timeline is to talk with your vendors and coordinator to see what they would suggest as a general timeline.

There are so many pieces to keep in mind and you may not be doing them all. Special events/portraits to keep in mind when planning:
- Hair & Makeup
- Bride Getting Ready
- Groom Getting Ready
- Pre Ceremony Activities
- First Look
- Bride & Groom Portraits
- Bridal Party Portraits
- Family Portraits
- Ceremony
- Just Married Portraits (My FAVORITES!)
- Reception & Events
- The Exit
Hair & Makeup
The hair and makeup seems to always take the longest. Some people don't particularly care for these shots. But if you're looking for something like the "mirror shot" of you putting on your makeup, or you want to capture the goofy antics of your bridal party, be sure to set aside time for these. Some brides like to have images of just them getting their hair and makeup done, others want images of everyone. Depending on the length and style of hair, plan for 45 minutes to an hour for each gal to get her hair done. Makeup takes between 30 and 45 minutes as well. If you're able to have multiple hairstylists and make up artists (or the gals are doing their own makeup) this time frame can be cut by quite a bit. Be sure to speak with your stylist and/or MUA prior to your wedding so that you'll have a great idea of how much time you'll need.
The Bridal Prep
Bridal prep generally depends on how elaborate your wedding day getup is. Does your dress have 3 dozen buttons down the back? You might want a few extra minutes (or sets of hands) to help button that lineup. Wearing strappy heels or going barefoot? A full set of glizty jewelry or just simple studs. All of this goes into the Bridal prep portion. You're photographer will want to capture images of you putting on your dress, your accessories, tons of details and a few portraits of you and your girls laughing and having a good time. I generally suggest giving 45 minutes to an hour for Bridal Prep images.
The Groom Prep
Groom prep is similar to the Bridal prep. You'll want detail images (cufflinks, special accessories, etc) and images of the guys having a good time. The benefit to Grooms is that they don't typically need a huge amount of time to get ready. 20-30 minutes is generally enough to photograph the Grooms entire routine and still leave time for fun shots.
Pre-Ceremony Activities
Sometimes, Brides & Grooms like to have downtime before their wedding. Maybe they're playing board games, dancing it out to a custom playlist or having a field day with lawn games. These are special activities that you may want to incorporate into your wedding day. Be sure to set aside an appropriate amount of time to get these things done and still have time to hide the Bride before the ceremony.
The First Look
Not everyone does a first look, but it can be a wonderful exclusive moment between the Bride and Groom before the ceremony. Generally it takes between 15 and 30 minutes (but you can use more or less, whatever you're comfortable with) from start to finish. Be sure to let your photographer know ahead of time if this is something that you want. See more of my thoughts on the first look here: http://www.markielynne.com/blog/2016/5/wedding-photography-planning-the-first-look
Bride & Groom Portraits
The B/G portraits are big ones. You definitely want to make sure you have time for these, whether it's before or after your ceremony. These are the images that the majority of couples showcase on the walls of their new home. I suggest setting aside at least 20 minutes for Bride & Groom portraits, separate from the rest of the formal portraits.
The Bridal Party & Family Portraits
These are the fun ones to orchestrate. You'll want images of the Bridesmaids, Groomsmen and the entire wedding party. Sometimes these portraits can take a bit to finish... especially if your groomsmen are screwing around like guys do best. ;) Generally they take 45-90 minutes, but these can be powered out in 30 if you have an expert "wrangler" on hand. I suggest selecting a friend or family member who knows everyone and giving them a list of the special pairings you want done. This way they can wrangle the group while the photographer is finishing your portraits.
The Ceremony
You'll know best exactly how long your ceremony takes. I've seen ceremonies as short as 10 minutes and as long as 45 minutes. Be sure to provide a 5-10 minute buffer because 90% of the time, the ceremony starts late. It has to be good luck or something, I've never figured it out.
Just Married Portraits
These are my FAVORITE images to shoot. After you & your groom have walked back down the aisle, I highly suggest taking 10-20 minutes with your photographer to bask in the glow of your new marriage. During this time, I typically tell brides that "I'm a chair" and don't exist. I will walk with you away from the crowd and allow you two to cuddle, snuggle and nuzzle one another as much as you'd like. Meanwhile, I'll photograph from a short distance away, and you get to enjoy a few minutes of solitude with your beloved.
Reception & Events
Depending on the wedding, receptions tend to run about 2-4 hours with a general schedule like this: Guests enter reception and mingle, Bride & Groom Entry, Mingle & Drink, Dinner, First Dance, Mother & Son/Father & Daughter dances, Garter Toss, Bouquet Toss, Special Dances, Cake cutting, Mingle, Mingle, Mingle, finally B&G Last Dance. Obviously things really depend on the couple here and what they wish to do. Some wish to dance first, some wish to go straight to dinner. Some even eat dessert first. The reception is also a wonderful time to get a huge group shot as well. If your photographer has a timer or remote, they can even join this shot. ;)
The Exit
This is an important piece to a lot of Brides, but with more and more DIY weddings popping up, it gets lost in the mix. Staging the Exit can be a good option if this is important to you. Otherwise, it's totally optional and you can skip it completely.
Remember that planning your wedding events is completely up to you and unique to every wedding. Nothing says you have to do them in this order, or that you have to do them at all. The next post will go through various options for wedding day timelines.
xoxo, Markie

The "First Look" has become an increasingly popular way for the Bride & Groom to meet on their wedding day. It's typically staged ahead of the ceremony and exclude friends, family and bridal parties from the images. The pictures are centered around the Bride & Groom alone and give them a few minutes to really take in the other person. Most first looks take around 10-20 minutes to setup and shoot, but if you need more time, I'm always willing to schedule a few extra minutes for the two of you.
I can, and I have, shot the first look during the wedding ceremony. With two photographers, it's a very simple setup to make sure that we're able to capture both the Bride's face, as well as that of her Groom. However, there is an amount of intimacy that is missed during these shots due to the large audience that will be viewing the couple at that time.
Whether or not you have a "First Look" is completely up to you. Skipping the first look does not take away from the emotion or imagery of your wedding day. It simply provides an additional private moment for you and your partner to escape from the hustle of the wedding day. First looks can be staged or happen during the ceremony. The Bride will still appear just as beautifully during the ceremony as she will during the first look.
Should you choose to have a first look, your photographer will find a nice quiet spot away from the rest of the wedding activities where you, your groom and your photographer can set up that special moment for the two of you. You can choose to exchange gifts, read letters or simply enjoy the calm company of the other person during this time.

1) Test your wedding day makeup before hand. Whether you're doing it yourself or trusting a professional Makeup Artist, you'll want to try out your look before hand. Take a day or two and play with different looks. Be sure to take pictures (selfies are awesome too!) so that you can see how your makeup looks.
2) Apply your makeup just as you would for every day wear. While a lot of places suggest applying extra makeup in order for it to show up in photographs, this really isn't necessary. Too much makeup is way too difficult to remove in post processing. Too little makeup is easier, but still time consuming. Refer to tip #1 so that you can find the perfect look for you.
3) Waterproof everything. Your mascara, eye liner, lip liner... if it can be waterproof, make sure it's waterproof. A wedding is a huge production in most cases. There will be sweat. There will be tears. Hopefully there won't be any blood. Prevent raccoon eyes and smears with waterproof makeup.
4) Use a primer and setting spray. In addition to your waterproofed everything, consider using a primer and setting spray for your makeup. The primer will assist in smoothing your concealer and foundation. The setting spray will help avoid needing too many touch ups (and hopefully keep you going all day without a single one!). My favorite primer is by Urban Decay and I personally use E.L.F.'s setting spray from Target.
5) Get your shades right. Going along with tip #1, do a trial run of your makeup and be sure that your shades are right. If you aren't sure, head to a MAC cosmetics counter or Sephora to have a consultant match your shade correctly. You don't want to choose a shade that makes you orange or washes you out! Having the correct shade is extremely important and avoids any added post production fees.
6) Consider the heat on your wedding day. Getting married in the middle of July? You may want to consider the heat and humidity of your climate. If the day is going to be warm, be sure to use an oil free foundation and keep blotting sheets on hand to erase excess oil throughout your day!
7) Avoid the glitter bomb. No seriously. Avoid it. Glitter can be a fun thing for photos, but not on your wedding day. Having a hair or makeup artist use a bunch of glitter can create odd reflections in your images. Glitter in your hair can appear like dandruff, and glitter on your cheeks can wash them out drastically. Ask your photographer for a couple special glitter shots, or wait until after your formal portraits are done to apply the shiny stuff.
]]>This place is amazing. Featuring a gorgeous waterfall, lush grassy field and the cabin that overlooks the lower area, there are dozens of tiny hidden places to photograph Brides & Grooms. The owner, Bill, was kind enough to answer a few questions about this wonderfully hidden away venue.
How long have you been in business?
Palmer Coking Coal Company (PCC) has been in business since 1933, so for 83 years. We have operated Shangri-La as a rental venue for over 30 years.
How did you decide to start a wedding venue?
We purchased the property in 1972 from a man (Lawrence Garner) who had established a private picnic venue which featured ponds, dams, play areas, and other lightly developed facilities. One of the partners (Bob Morris) saw Shangri-La's potential as a venue for summer picnics, reunions, parties, and private camping. In 1985, Bob had his own wedding at Shangri-La. The wedding and reception were such a success that many began to see the future of Shangri-La in a new light.
What is the best feature of your venue?
Specifically the waterfall; but more generally the peaceful serenity provided by a lightly cleared forest environment with enough comforts to make your stay enjoyable.
What is it like working with you?
We see our venue as a blank slate of natural beauty upon which the bride and groom can write their story. With that in mind, the facilities are simple leaving the design and style of their wedding as an open book.
Will you be adding any updates or unique features in the future?
Shangri-La has evolved over the years and will continue to do so. However, we see preservation of the natural beauty as our primary goal so that visitors can enjoy a unique experience that is like no other.
What other special things should brides & grooms know about your venue?
Be prepared for the great outdoors. Accept the fact that you are living in the Pacific Northwest as weather changes can be unexpected. Relax, take a deep breath, and marvel at the wonders of nature which surround you at Shangri-La On The Green.
For a deeper understanding of Shangri-La please take the time to read the history or our unique site nestled deep in the Green River Gorge: http://shangrilaonthegreen.com/History%20of%20Shangri-La%20On%20The%20Green.htm
"Shangri-La": a remote, beautiful and imaginary place where life approached perfection as depicted in the 1933 novel "Lost Horizon" by James Hilton; i.e. utopia-- --- from the History of Shangri-La (above)
I loved being able to enjoy the serenity of this venue during Anna + Jared's wedding and I look forward to photographing here again in the future. Much love. xoxo, Markie

This wedding was super special to me, and I’m thrilled that I was the one chosen to capture their special day! I met the bride in Junior High, when I was close friends with her older brother. I can’t believe that was over 15 years ago!
This lovely couple started dating in high school and tied the knot 11 years after their first date! I couldn’t be happier for them. From the handmade jewelry and bouquets, to the delicious cupcakes and dinner, every single piece of this wedding was hand picked by the bride and hours upon hours of hand crafting went into it!

I was thrilled when she messaged me and said she wanted to book a session for herself and her two kiddos. These three were such a fun family and even braved the rainy, wet weather to get their session in! We grew up two towns apart, with two different sets of parents but born on the same day, same year. She’ll always be my twinsie. Love you girly.
